I've had Sprint for 17 years and have been traveling (Motor Home) for longer than that. I now have a IPhone 4S, for several years prior I had a Sprint Android, prior to that I had a Spring Flip Phone.
Once in all my travels I have not been have to get a connection - At a campground few miles outside of Santa Fe MN - but when I got closer to SF I was able to connect.
Some of my trips have been:
FL to OR (northern route) back to FL (southern route), NC to NM (I40 all the way) 6 or 8 round trips, NC to Key West (I95), NC to Ft Meyers, FL (I85, I75) and nowhere did I ever have a loss of connection.
Did take a cruse to the Western Caribbean - not much signal out to sea.
Now I' sure if you took Highway 80 across country (not Interstate 80) there would be lot of places between cities without signal - but on major highways there is most often connection available.

I have sprint. I roam with voice & data. I always have a connection although when roaming it is 1XRTT. I wouldn't ever claim Sprint is the one to get, however with the 12 year old plan I have it is unbeatable!

The Verizon 4g phones can talk/surf at the same time. We go offroading. It's common for AT&T phones to have no service. The AT&T Iphone does have faster data in the metro areas if you can make a connection. I average 1gb/week. I have a Verizon Samsung Nexus. It's awesome. Also check the Htc Rezound. 4g battedy life is a problem. Let her have the iphone. Go with a 4g At&t or Verizon phone. Avoid Sprint/Tmobile. Also check out the Wilson Electronics Sleek. It's a cell booster. I have three boosters. Two of them the Sleek.

my verizon 4G phones (samsung charge and HTC ) won't let me talk and surf at the same time, what's the trick you use phone and internet at the same time with Verizon. Verizon claims you can't.

Not sure what the trick is. Sorry. My Nexus phone does this right out of the box. I also know the Htc Rezound can do both at the same time. I know two people with the Charge. I'll try their phones in a few days.
Verizon just announced double your data for 4g phones starting Feb 10th. 4gb/month for $30 versus the normal 2gb.

From our experience with "pay as you go" phones and my brothers phones, I'd go with Verizon for coverage and AT&T for value. My brother and I both have had Sprint/Nextel/Boost and the Boost phone was lousy on our trip this last fall. 37 states and six provinces. DD has Boost no contract full service $50/month service and still has lousy coverage. Verizon is most expensive but like someone else said you get what you pay for.

Check the carriers own coverage maps. Nobody comes close to providing the geographic coverage of Verizon Wireless. 4G is only available in major metropolitan areas, like only in Tucson and Phoenix for the state of AZ and only in Ogden and Salt Lake for all of Utah, and this applies to the entire USA. I live 40 miles from the heart of Silicon Valley and that is how far I need to drive to get 4G service (not really worth the drive).
With the switch to 4G the carriers have halted their additions of 3G towers so out in the boondocks it is status quo for now. When traveling we often hit the nearest town and head for the library where we can get WiFi and it is free. We had a much easier time in Costa Rica than in the Western USA but then in Costa Rica the government is in charge of the phone service so it is to be expected that they would do a better job.

After roaming over forty states for the past ten years, I found not that much difference in coverage between Sprint and Verizon. Right now, I am using Sprint for Internet and Verizon for phone service. Very rarely does one of them not work, but they both have failed a few times.
