I use mayonaise, on the side that touches the frying pan, on my grilled cheese sandwiches and they come out perfect. Just spread thin and evenly on the bread and cook the same way.

Country Crock is your problem in my estimation

Country crock is butter flavored wax just like most margarine.
Country Crock is a 'spread', not a margarine. Real margarine, while not NEARLY as good (or as healthy, for that matter) as butter will still give you decent grilled cheese sandwiches. IMHO, 'spreads' are horrible for just about any application.

My thanks to all for the help given, those of you that thought it was the country crock of crap,,,on the nosey!!! It is presently sitting on the bottom of the trash bin never to be purchased again. Frau Blücher immediately tossed the sticky mess into the garbage and with great success made the perfect grilled cheese, using BUTTER and good ol' Kraft cheese slices,,MMMMMMMMMMMM,golden brown and delicious!!!

I've used Country Crock for over 20 years and made hundreds of grilled cheeses with no problem. Seems like this summer, they started sticking to the pan. I wondered if it is the pan (non-stick), the bread or not having the pan hot enough. I've had burned sandwiches, watery sandwiches, not the perfect gc.

Now that someone mentioned it, I have to try mayonnaise! I do remember it being used years ago when I worked in a drugstore that had a grill (& soda fountain!).

Maybe I could make my own...oil, egg yolks, lemon juice. Uh, anyone have a recipe?

It's funny I remember the margarine in the bag that you had to mix. In fact here in Wisconsin it was not legal to buy margarine when I was young. An uncle trucker would call when he was going to Michigan for an oleo run and we would all stock up.

Lol Guess we are about the same age,I remember white oleo that came with a red tablet or capsuel(?) that you had to mix in to make it yellow like butter. So long ago I almost forgot about that!

mixing the oleo and the dye pill was lots of fun for kids. I was going to suggest going to Rite Aid and buying one of the green skillets for 19.95. Nothing is supposed to stick in them. Bought my s-n-l one for Christmas and he loves it.

I have always used mayonnaise as did my mom. I was shocked to hear that people used butter!

One day when I was in junior high, I had come home sick from school, so mom decided to turn my mayo, mustard and cheese sandwich into a grilled cheese. Yummy! Now I always add mustard to the inside of the sammie before cooking.

I've only had it stick to a cheap thin (nonstick) griddle. I think the culprit is using too high heat. I threw out that griddle because I could not use it hit enough.
