It depends on where I'm going. Yellowstone? Florida? Definitely get reservations if you want to *know* you have a place to park it. Traveling cross country on some major interstate? Probably don't need them. Just don't wait until 10pm to pull off. Here in North Georgia, you pretty much have to have reservations for any of the COEs and state parks any weekend during the summer. You might get lucky if you can pull in on Thursday, but if you wait until Friday afternoon you'll be out of luck.

Put us in with the "no reservations" folks. If worried, we do rarely call ahead an hour or so to make reservations. A few times we've made them further ahead for special events. In over 200,000 miles we ONCE had to go to the next campground a few miles down the road.

Might not always get full hooks, or the best site, but we get one. Almost always have electric.

Since we are not sure from day to day which road we might take, what neat things we might stop and see on the way, how long seeing them might take, or where we will get tired, how on earth could we make reservations?

I'm a FHU kinda guy. I make reservations for all the parks where I intend to stay for a week or more, before I ever leave home. I assume that I'll cover about 350 miles per day so I also make a list of RV Parks in each of the areas along the way, but I don't make reservations. I'm usually in those places by 3PM, and I've never had a problem getting a spot for a single night, except for one time. Had to drive an extra 80 miles that day. That's the only time I had to alter my plans in the last 7 years.

Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

When overnighting while traveling to our destination campground, where we do have reservations, we just get on the cell phone and call a campground a town or two ahead to check for vacancies. We're in no hurry, and are likely to make unscheduled stops to explore the local tourist traps, so reservations won't always work for us. There's always somewhere to pull over. Once, we were overnighted in a gas station just west of Espanola, NM.

Really appreciate all the replies. WalMart keeps coming up . . . . . how does that work for you? Thanks!

Until last summer, I have ALWAYS made reservations. I'm a meticulous planner, and not knowing for sure that somebody someplace has a spot with my name on it for the night is unnerving for me. I like the reassurance afforded by reserving a site. It helps me sleep better.

That being said, we winged-it on one of our trips this summer, and I found it oddly liberating.

We had a destination in mind, and knew there were several options in the area, so we rolled the dice. Of course, our initial destination was full-up mid-week with ZERO available sites. However, the ranger was able to give us a list of nearby campgrounds to choose from. We rolled the dice and ended up in a VERY nice, newly-renovated RV park (our first experience in such a place). Turned out to be one of the nicest campgrounds we've ever stayed at, for only a couple of dollars more than the original rustic campground would have cost us.

We're definitely planning on heading back to the area this summer for a week. Even the wife is looking forward to the adventure!

We have favorite sites at several CG's that we frequent, so yes, we typically do make reservations well in advance.

Okay... The big question is...

Will you be making reservations for that week at that special CG?

Doubtful... We may stay there for a night or two mostly because they have a nice clean pool that our 2-year-old will surely want to enjoy, but we found several other places we want to check out while we were up there, and there is still the original destination we tried to get into last year (Sleeping Bear State Park Campground).
