The ammo probably has to do with the HazMat fees required.

There are a lot of variables regard the transport of ammunition. BTW, there are a number of federal agencies involved and they each have different interests. I would not accept a verbal response to an inquirey from any of them as they are likely worthless.

Local shooting organizations probably can give you the straight skinny on this. Both Kalifornia and Oregon have very active groups. Their members are probably transporting both firearms and ammo to matches and events. They can probably advise you on which muncipalities to avoid and the acceptable norms.

I am not aware of any particular ammunition restrictions similar to New Jersey's. In NJ just having a single, common hollow point cartridge, even without a gun can land you in prison. So in more restrictive states it is very important to know the law.

The NRA can probably point you to the local groups that may have the best advice.

We'll be moving from Ca to Or in a couple months. Does anyone know if there are limits to how much ammo you can transport? Where can I find that information?
The moving company can take the guns my dad handed down to me, but they can't take the ammunition.

Thanks

If your worried about it then I'll buy it from you. "Don't ask, Don't tell" is the best policy. Not sure I would trust the movers with my guns

Some just like to comment. I especially like the ones who say " I don't know so I can't say.
No, this one is an anti gun nut and he always responds with comments on any gun thread, that will get them closed, after he hits notify moderator button.

As a trap shooter, I have gone through state inspections with over 10K rounds and never been challenged. Just declare the ammo, if stopped.

I can't answer your question about legally but I will tell you I have traveled from Los Angeles to the Oregon coast since I was 9 years old and even had a home there and never once in over 60 years have we ever been stopped at a roadblock and been asked how much ammo we were carrying. I've only been stopped once in all those years and that was for two miles over and rather CS. I've never even wondered about it. It's a DA,DT type of thing. Wish I was going up there to live even though my grand nephew's fiver was swept away in the floods on the coast.

Ammo is heavy. I'm surprised the weight police haven't chimed in here that you'll be overweight. But seriously, I would NEVER trust a moving company with my firearms.

The first mistake was to tell anyone, including the moving company, what was in the box. What they don't know won't hurt you.

If you are going to trust your firearms to a moving company, I would check on all there rules regarding the shipment of firearms and how they are insured. You would want full details and photos of the firearms before and after shipment.

You might also check to see if the mover can legitimately ship the firearms. There may be additional requirements both at state and local levels.

The only time I trust my firearms to a shipper is when I have to otherwise they travel with me.

There is no HazMat regulation pertaining to the transportation of LOADED ammunition. LOADED ammunition is NOT considered HazMat since the primer and powder (the only potentially HazMat items) are contained within the LOADED cartridge.

ORM-D markings apply when shipping LOADED ammunition via common ground carrier (UPS, FedEx, etc etc etc)....and for that matter it's only a declaration with specific markings, still NOT HazMat.

Short(er) answer: You can carry whatever you want so long as you don't exceed 80,000 lbs GVWR......vehicle dependent of course!
