We've been expecting our old Magnavox TV to die for some time now, but it continues to work well, day after day, and we're reluctant to part with it. (It's about 22 years old, one of the last built in the USA.)

No HDMI port of course, it's obviously analog/low definition, but does have the RCA audio and video jacks.

Has anyone come up with a method to stream video from a computer to an obsolete TV like ours? Or do we have to replace it?

BTW, our cable provider converts the digital signals to analog at their end, so no digital-to-analog converter is needed. However, this will change soon, and they will be providing "free" D-A converters for those of us with old analog TV's.

You can use a TV with S-video or RCA connectors. The fact that your TV is 22 yo means that it only has a regular coax connector. Therefore, connecting the TV directly to a computer won't happen. However, if you have a VCR or DVD player that has a video in and will send the signal out via the TV coax that may work. There are pigtails that will convert a video jack to RCA. Google "connect computer to TV" and you'll find the info.

Does your TV have anything other than the RF antenna connector? If not, you pretty much limited to converting the signal to, say channel 3 or 4 - What "goodcrusin" mentioned is also a way to get there and is essentially the same thing - Here is a link you might review and see if any of this work for you "ESPECIALLY" if you do "goodcrusin's" route - http://www.starkelectronic.com/pi4925.htm

Of course you can also purchase a channel 3/4 modulator and a VGA to NTSC modulator - if cost is an utmost concern, some of the Chinese stuff actually works well. You can also check CCTV (surveillance camera) suppliers too.

I still have 3 out of 7 TV's in my house running NTSC. I just convert the HDMI to NTSC and send it out throughout the house on channel 30. Not exactly what you want to do, but similar - there are all sorts of convertors "out there"

, but does have the RCA audio and video jacks.

you need a VGA to AV adapter module, something like this one $14

VGA to AV on Amazon

Google search VGA converter

there are some cheaper ones called "Breakout cables" AFAIK they do Not convert the signal, and will not work

Mr. Wizard . . .

The one you "linked to," doesn't appear to "do audio" and it doesn't have an RF modulator. He likely only has an RF input option to the TV.

This or something similar may be available from AMAZON too..

Pc Audio does not come from the vga plug
For that he needs a mini plug adapter to rca audio snd plug into the external audio port on the laptop
Same place you plug in the head phones

still sounds like he wants sound - he also still needs the VCR as the modulator or a separate channel modulator too

He said the tv has rca jack AV input
He doe not need an rf modulator
Just the video adapter for the video signal and theaudio cable

Even if the tv already had a vga computer input it would still require seperate cables for sound

Computer sound has always been on sperate output
Even high end video cards for desktop pc has seperate audio output

Thanks for the replies and advice.

Probably a device like ONE OF THESE would accomplish what we need. They're reasonably priced, and have had good reviews, but of course your further comments are most appreciated.

yes the PC to TV will do the video
the $29.95 one looks like the $14 one from Amazon

no matter which one you get, you WILL need a separate cable for sound from PC to TV
