As for reservations, all I can tell you is that in over 48 years of travelling all over the country, we have not made nor needed reservations. We do sometimes call ahead an hour or two to check on availability, but do that rarely. Go and have fun.

In April and May just be careful in the mountain passes. They can get icy at times. April and May can be windy. I agree this has been a warm winter up here in Wyoming so far.

Look for tracks in front of you. We're leaving early March. We have done the trip from Alabama to Idaho five times in four years, and we have never had reservations yet. Have called ahead couple hours out.

Stay at lower altitudes. Check out Santa Fe while in NM. We were there last summer and enjoyed the area. Stayed at Santa Fe Skies a bit southwest of the city and found it a very nice campground with great facilities.
