If you are really worried about protection skip the software firewall and get a good hardware firewall router. The software firewalls are good to determine phone home programs, but a hardware firewall offers greater protection.

The main problem with the two you asked about is that if you want the "best security" option from them, they give you so many msgs to answer yes to that it becomes annoying. Unless you have some major security issue, the firewall from Windows 7 is plenty.
I switched over a year ago with zero problems.

I use Zone Alarm. it is not only the most effective, but it's the most annoying, I do not know if this is still the case but when I started using it it was the only one alerting when a program tried to call out (This is why it is most annoying) but that very feature did me big time favors so I keep using it. (IT discovered programs that were NOT supposed to be on daughter's dell)

I've been using Comodo for several years. It seems to use less system resources and doesn't interfere with my network.

I use Zone Alarm Extreme Security along with Malwarebytes. I also use the SMC router. So far no problems.

I switched over a year ago with zero problems. I would also add that if you are going to install a separate firewall you had better be knowledgeable enough to know when to ALLOW and when to DENY an access request!

as does ZoneAlarm. been using ZA for years and plan to keep doing so. the only complaint i have is the occasional spiel to buy the upgraded ZA package but that's minor.

Y-Guy, I live in an RV so a hardware firewall is not an option. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
Reading the other replies on this thread it appears that both ZA and Comodo are about equally recommended by users. I remember trying to use Comodo some time ago but was flabbergasted by all the popups and warnings. I now realize that this FW can be set to minimize those warn ings. I've recently read test results in a technology magazine online that put Comodo ahead of the other free firewalls, and even ahead of some paid products.
So I may try Comodo once more, knowing I can always go back to ZoneAlarm. Thanks again for all the replies and suggestions....Ed

I've used Zone Alarm and Comodo and now use the Windows 7 default firewall. Toss a coin IMO. Although it would have to be a three sided coin.
