Would I be crazy to plan a very short trip to Pike's Peak in early March? Trip will only be with the truck, no trailer. I won't make any hotel reservations so we can preserve our flexibility in case the trip has to be canceled. Haven't been in the mountains of the west in the winter time so I just want to know if there is too good of a chance for roads being dangerous/impassible to try to plan a trip for that time.
Thanks. Mike

We go to Colorado Springs in July and it gets down in the 40's in the mountains at night. We love to stay at Mueller SP. And we have friends in Woodland Park and that side of the Springs always gets bigger snows. I don't even know if the road to the top would be open then, if that is something you wanted to do.

We just had 17.5 inches of snow Thurs/Friday here in Elizabeth. We are about 1 hour north of Colorado Springs. March can be dicey for heavy snowstorms here. We've been known to have blizzards in March and April. This year most of the snow has been in the mountains until this last weekend. Since you aren't bringing the RV it is up to you.

We often go camping at various locations in Colorado over spring break. However, activities and camping are are always limited because of the time of year. What would you want to see and do? Both the road and railway to the summit will be closed, but there are other things to do in the area.
Have fun;

I've only been up there a couple times, last time in July when there was plenty of snow on the ground. I would not want to think about going down that road in ice conditions.

GO. There are more nice days in March that there are bad. The road to Pikes Peak will be closed, but many area attractions are open year round. I've done alot of camping around Colorado in some pretty nice weather during that month. March can be iffy at times, but most of the time, it's really nice. You're planning on staying in motels, come on out, you'll have a great time.

Take the cog railway....runs right through the snowfields. Blizzard could even postpone the train, but less likely.

Thanks for all the responses! We were just hoping to go for a ride and see the sights in the mountains. We have never been west of Iowa, so we figured it would be fun to take a ride through the mountains of the west. I didn't know the road to the top was closed so thanks for the heads up! When does the road open?
We are leaving from mid-Michigan and will probably do the trip in 4 days or so. We will basically arrive, spend the night, and turn around and come home. We love spending time in the truck just enjoying the sights of new places, so we figured the mountains of the west would be nice. I'm SURE we will be returning in the future to spend more time, but we simply want to kill time for a few days when we both have off.

March and April can be the snow months. THis winter there has been more snow on the Front Range then in the mountains. You will need to watch the weather and make plans from there. The road up the Peak opens when it can be cleared, no set date. The train does not allows run to the top depending on snow depth that time of the year either.
