The beach has some nice campgrounds, Solvang and the lake just east of Solvang.
Summer time camping can be crowded, but Frasier Park (I5 top of the grapevine) is nice and cool that time of year. Lots of places to get off the beaten path, check with the ranger's station that is west of town about 5-10 miles.
If you want to go out to the desert, and be alone, then Jawbone Canyon has lots of places to camp. It is 14 miles north of Mohave. A little closer is Gorman's off road recreation area.

Joshua Tree, Anza Borrego, or up by Lake Isabella in the Southern Sierras east of Bakersfield
and close to your home juset north of Lake Cachuma you can access
the following. Its an absolutely spectacular area.
Figueroa, Nira and Davy Brown campgrounds are reached by Figueroa Mountain Road from Los Olivos and are a portal to the network of trails in the Los Padres National Forest. The campgrounds feature fire pits, bathrooms (some primitive) and picnic tables but do not offer RV hookups. Their location puts them at the heart of some of the Central Coast’s most stunning mountainscapes

We like to go to Thornehill Broome just south of Oxnard. It's 25 a night, but you are right on the beach.

We were thinking next week. I beleve Frasier is closed this time of year, that would be my first choice.

Anza Borrego because the this is the time of the year the desert is tolerable. It's just perfect out there now. And you can camp just about anywhere!

What about Death Valley? A bit further than some of the other recommendations but with the grandeur you expect for a national park.
