Good choice.
Needles is notorious for high gas prices and scams.

for overnighting on I 10, we like:
reststop 8 miles west of Sonora
reststop just west of Van Horn
Flying J or reststop at exit 1, Anthony, TX. There is also a Camping World about a mile east of there. The reststop is a welcome center, I think.
Texas Canyon reststop, very pretty
Reststop on I 8 a few miles west of I 10.
Going to Lake Meade:
if you go up 93 out of Phoenix, there is a great little Fed. Campground a few miles south of Wikeup, AZ called Burro Creek campground. Water and dump.

Thanks for info. We are at Las Vegas Bay campground at Lake Mead. This is a jewel in the desert. Many different size sites, lots of palms, oleanders bushes & trees. Dump & water, no electric. Even has a section, no generators.

Try the other campgrounds around Lake Mead all are great.
Not far away is the Valley of Fire State Park. Camping is spectacular.

Spent some time at Government Wash (north and east) on the other side. Free, but really rough getting around in there.
