Hi all! Made the mistake of going to the Atlanta RV show last weekend and my wife fell in love with a V-Lite 21WRS. It is a fantastic camper with a bunch of amenities and I like the fact I can pull 25' and get 30' of living spaces at the camp site.

My only concern with this camper is the high tounge weight compared to other campers of equal length. The dry hitch weight is 597 lbs. - with a dry camper weight of 4,991. Any way to guess at what hitch weight would be when "ready to camp"? I assume the high hitchweight has to do with the front bathroom and holding tanks. Not sure how much I could store in the rear of this camper to take weight off of the tounge?

My TV is a 2010 Tundra, 5.7 with Tow package. Best I can tell the payload limit is 1,380 lbs. If I assume the wife, two pugs, myself and a tank of gas - I get around 600 lbs. Not sure if the WD hitch goes toward payload, but I think I am very close to maxing out?

Am I being overly cautious? We have looked at dozens of trailers, and this is the one we want - but I don't want it to cause problems on the road.

Camper specs are here:

Safe estimate...
Multiply the GVWR of the trailer by 15%.
So for that rig...about 980 lbs of tongue weight tops..

I have found that, if you add about 300lbs to the advertised "dry" tongue weight, the result will be pretty accurate in most cases when you are loaded and ready to go camping.

Any thing or weight you put on the truck, including hitch weight, goes against the payload.

Sounds like you're going to be pretty close with the passengers and cargo plus a 15% tongue weight. Toyota makes a very fine truck but their payload is about as low as anyone in the industry. It can make the big tow rating a moot point when you can't carry the loaded tongue weight. Might be worth getting some REAL numbers from another user of that trailer and find a weight scale to see what the loaded tongue weight actually is. Also, rather than taking published payload numbers load up your truck with everyone and everything you'd take with you when towing and hit the scales yourself and see exactly what the weight difference is between actual weight and your GVWR from your door post. THAT number will be your REAL limit for tongue weight.

I tow a 2011 rock wood 2304s with my 08 tundra dc 5.7 with tow package. My trailer weighs about the same as yours but my dry tongue is 700 lbs.I travel with my wife and 60 lb dog firewood and Yamaha 2000 generator and other stuff. The truck does a really great job much much better than my 06 tundra dc night and day difference.
