It has been done before. You will need to tie off the steering wheel so the front tires remain straight. Tow trucks lift rear wheel drive cars by the rear axle all the time to tow them away. Pretty sure there's no law against towing a car backwards, even here in California, where there is a law against just about everything.

Thank you. I have an old BMW wagon that is the perfect car for my dog once I settle in at an RV resort. Will be pulling it with a 40' American Eagle. Planning on going from FL to WI for the summer. After 23-years, I had enough of the FL summer heat.
For that long of a distance, I would use a flatbed trailer to haul the car, or put it on the dolly forward and disconnect the rear driveshaft and tie it up, or tow it on a tow bar with the driveshaft disconnected. For just a cross-town trip, hauling backwards on the dolly would be fine. Like I say, tow truck drivers pull cars that way all the time in the city, but they don't take them several states away by that method.

I have towed both ways without anyproblem. I had a F150 that I towed 2k miles backwards and never had a problem of any kind. No weaving, wear on front tires, nothing. I droped the driveshaft one time and pulled it forwards and there was no difference until i had to lay under it and put the driveshaft back in during a rain storm..I have also towed a Ranger pickup backwards without any problem at all. They both towed stright and no weaving..This was behind a 37' Class A...If it is straped down properly and tight you should not have any problem with it....

Load it and have someone follow you and see how it handles and see if the tires wiggle wildly. Check for unusual wear. And then check the lug nuts they have a tendency to loosen up going back wards. On Semi-tractors they tow them backward all the time. When they hit the yard thats one of the first things that gets attention.

Best to just disconnect the driveshaft, for the above reasons and 3 more. Firstly, it's not difficult to undo the driveshaft from the differential, I can do it in half an hour. Second, you don't want to risk ripping the airdam off the nose of the car, and third, the rear of the car has a better departure angle.
Another option is to trade yours in on one with a manual transmission, so there won't be any need to disconnect the driveshaft.

Wreckers tow backwards all the time with no problems. While this is not the best way, I have towed my 2005 Durango backwards a couple thousand miles. No problems so far. Just make sure the steering wheel is locked / secured.

Our camping neighbors tow their fairly new Ford PU with a topper to Biloxi every year with no problems, backwards. They are now staying in the Moose Lodge campground and it's a red Ford if you want to talk to them.

Most do not know how to do it correctly so it is easier to just tell them it can not be done.

Number two most are towing FWD stuff so it is a non issue.
