Hi all
Looking to visit SC and would like the opinions on the best time of year to make the trip. Would like to check out the country west of Columbia, there looks to be a nice route west out of Gaffney skirting the state border around to the Augusta area. Would like to avoid the heat/humidity and bugs as much as practical. At the moment I'm looking for 2-3 weeks between the end of August and end of Oct.

Best time would be in the fall or Spring.....Fall will have the foliage change, with a wealth of beautiful colors....and should be fairly cool temperature wise.
While Spring will have the vibrant colors of new flowers and the tree blossoms.
Problem with Spring, would probably be the higher chance of rain, which could ruin a camping trip.

With the dates you have planned, I'd go for the later date in the fall, as it will be much cooler, and depending on how the weather is, you might even need a sweatshirt of light jacket....which is nice for a walk.

April 1st. (since it has been a warm winter maybe a little earlier) And visit the flower Gardens.

Please give me enough troubles, uncertainty, problems, obstacles and STRESS so that I do not become arrogant, proud, and smug in my own abilities, and enough blessings and good times that I realize that someone else is in charge of my life.

No earlier than mid-October---fall can be very warm, humid, and late in the deep South. No later than mid-April--things warm up fast.

You can go to weather.com, put in a city & state, look up the monthly forecast, and then there is a link that will take you to averages & records for any month you pick.

I've worked in the Carolinas for the past 18 years. As a full-timer, I like that area. There are numerous C.O.E., Sate, and County Parks along the Savannah River and it's subsequent lakes, from Devils Fork SP on Lake Jocassee on the North to Petersburg C.O.E. park on Lake Thurmond on the South near Augusta, Ga. IMHO, the best time is after labor day when the kids are back in school. The weather is still warm enough to enjoy the lakes, campgrounds are far less crowded, and the chances of finding a spot on weekends are considerably better.

Most of the C.O.E. parks are open until the end of Oct. when they start closing for the winter, although several will remain open year round. Also, the America the Beautiful "geezer" pass makes camping at the C.O.E. parks very reasonable. I use this site to locate government parks. Good luck.

Unless you are into GOLF.. be sure and not go to Augusta the first week of April. The town turns into a Golf destination. Restaurants, highways and other sites are packed.

Good thoughts by Eycom......we like Sept in the Carolina's....usually warm enough to swim at Devils Fork the first half of month. Great leaf colors in October

Thanks all, made reservations for Columbus weekend, those are the only days I'm going to worry about.
