My aunt was a high school English teacher and retired after 25 years, about 10 years before SS. She went back the next school year as a teacher's aide. Doesn't pay as well, but there's little to no responsiblity, no papers to grade, etc. She really enjoys it and she gets medical benefits.
Going from a Teacher's salary to getting minimum wage as a Greeter at Wal-Mart might be tough to deal with. I know I would have a tough time accepting it, although Wal-Mart Greeter would definitely be an ideal job for me

Beth, I just retired after 32 years of teaching myself. I can understand that you may want to try something in a completely different field. In Ky. you don't get to draw Social Security, so I am a little surprised that you will get to. Subbing probably has the most flexibility and is the best pay. Tutoring jobs are hard to find and IMHO the time goes very slow. An aides position does have a lot of benefits. Work with the same kids every day, usually work in a small group, get to leave right after school. No papers to correct, no parents to contact in the evenings.(It would be like working half a day!) Still get off at holidays and summer. Pay is not good; about $13,000. in Ky., but in Ky. there is a limit to how much you can make per year in addition to your teacher's salary anyway. For a complete change of scenery - I have five friends who are working for a caterer. They work weddings, parties, etc. If they have something going on, or want to travel, they just mark off on the calendar for those days. They are kind of on call. Flexible schedule, but not guaranteed salary. They all really like it, but you do have to work alot of evenings and weekends. Have you thought of signing up with a temp service. I have worked for some in the past. Some jobs are filing, making phone calls, etc. You don't have to take jobs you don't want. What about being a hostess at a restaurant. I really enjoyed that position. You get to meet lots of people and it is easy work. You may just enjoy working retail for a change. Stocking shelves or folding clothes is a lot less stress than dealing with hundreds of kids and their parents every day! Good Luck. If you are like me, staying home may sound good, but can be boring and you may feel unproductive after working so hard for so long. Just try something. If you don't enjoy it, now you will have the option to quit and try something else.
