Just moved up from a 2000 KSDP to a 2005 Itasca Horizon and from my old faithful A&E 8500 manual awning to a power A&E WeatherPRO. I used to stake my old awning with spring loaded tension cables and it survived every wind and rain storm I ever had. Now I'm wondering, can I stake the WeatherPRO with the same tension spring cables I used to use with my old awning? I know I can disable the wind sensor, but will the awning itself survive the wind and rain if it's staked down with spring tension lines? Anyone do this?

I'm not in favor of staking any awning.
If it's too windy to be safely out without ropes, it comes in.

I stake mine down, But, it comes in every nite, or when we leave the site. BTW, I had the screen made that attaches to the awning, and that's why I do it. Robbie

When in Florida for the winter I anchor my WeatherPro for four months using those spring-tensioned cables. Have done this for the past 8 years without a problem. BUT, my site and the entire park has many trees and is faily well protected from the wind. For the rest of the year, at all of our rallys, when I use the awning I do not anchor it. If I am going to leave the area I put up the awning. I do the same any night that is questionable. Ease of stowing is the best thing about these new awnings.

Be aware, some Weatherpro awnings (like mine) also move in when the temp goes below freezing. Mine also will retract when the temp is very high (like 90 degrees plus) - it's not advertised or in the manual, but mine does it, and I've been told it is a fairly well-known occurance. Mine also retracts when it gets a voltage fluctuation in the 12-volt system, which happens when we start the generator.

So, if I were to stake down any power awning, I would unplug the 12 volts to the motor (easy enough to do on mine, the box is right over the door).

I saw a staked down awning blow up over the coach when hit by a whirl wind. Broke two straps, ripped off awning stop flaps, and broke both awning arms. He was a camp host and had been doing same thing in the same spot for years. Could not believe the damage. I've never thought of anchoring down my awning since.

Hi All.

We are big fans of staking down our Awnings on every RV we have owned. But we have never owned one like yours. But at the same time, nothing beats good old common sense. We also close ours up at night and when we leave the campsite. Staking will give you a liitle more leway wiht rain and some wind. But we sure don't push our luck. When it doubt, close it back up. Better to be safe than sorry. As said, you could disable the power to your Awning, but is the rest of your Awning, the arms and attachments as strong as the regular Awnings are? Good Luck. Happy Travels. Dan & Jill
