Keep it dry or put a few gallons in with some stabilizer?

The gas tank?

If you let it dry out, then whatever fuel remained can leave behind varnish. Also the fuel sender can become rusty sitting above the fuel in air, the arm might stick in one place, (with rust on the resistor that is the sending unit) and when adding fuel again might read "E" for a while, then break off - like mine did. Well mine worked fine a few more times after that summer with $4 gas that I did not leave it full, but within a few trips, the fuel sender quit working, and probably broke the arm. I need to drop the tank to find out for sure, that will take many hours, and probably require putting in a new fuel pump as well as the sender (The F53 fuel pump from 95 - 99 was known to fail before 50,000 miles, so it would be recommended to change it out before I reach that mileage, avoiding changing it in a small town without good labor rates.

Adding fuel stabilizer will keep the tank rust free, the sending unit in better shape, and if you have a generator will allow that to be run once in a while too.

Propane tanks do not require stabilizer, as the fuel does not leak out like a gasoline tank can vent out the pipes.

It is new so the tank has never been filled. I could fill it I guess and use it to top off the generator (separate not built in). I am however a rule follower for the most part and pumping gas when I and everyone around me has cookers going with fire in them kinda goes against all the warning labels.

Do you not have a built in generator? If you don't then they might not have put fuel in it, but there is a chance they did to test the fuel pump too. If you can avoid cooking next to the fuel pump area that would be good, but if you are on the other side I'd think you will be fine. But safety is always good.

As the others have said, some stabilizer and fuel is probably a better way go in the long run.

I will be set up and cooking either behind the trailer or on the right side. The fuel station is at the left rear. Depending on the contest you may have people right next to you or your end to end. It just depends if your cooking on streets, parking lots, or something else. I bought a stand alone generator so that it would serve as insurance against losing power again at the house and for our bbq competitions.

Honestly when I think about what is the difference if your pumping fuel or pouring it from a gas can into the generator? Both are gonna be happening.

TH refuel tanks are safer to use than having smaller gas cans kicking around. I'd use it for refueling the generator.

Fuel storage tanks should always be kept topped off to minimize condensation, and if stored longer than 4 months, add stabilizer. JMO

Sorry if this post seems long, I lacked the time to make it shorter.

I helped run a KCBS event some 20 years ago, of course at one point the power blew during the evening. Those guys that had generators didn't worry about it, the others were frantic. Good luck with your next competition!

What kind of TV do you have? If it is a gasser you could also use it to refill your TV when you are ready to leave and not have to stop for fuel. Just a thought...
