We have a grandaughter's wedding to go to July 28th. in San Diego where she lives & works. We're going in the MH and will make it a month to 6wk trip. We're planning on 4 to 6days getting there. Route isn't a problem for that part. Leaving the Big Easy get on I-10W, turn left onto I-8 & go to the end.
San Antonio on the 1st loong day and stay 2nights and eat at our 2 favorite Tex-Mex restaurants there. When in San Diego we're looking at 3 RV parks near where everything concerning the weding is happening. Campland on the Bay, Mission Bay, both very expensive and Santa Fe RV Park which is between the freeway and a railroad but is a Passport park. Any thoughts on these?
Leaving San Diego we're heading to Simi Valley and the Reagan Library, probably 2 nights @ Tapo Canyon park. Any insight on which freeway to use to get to Ca118. Now is the biggie, leaving Simi Valley what is the best way to get to I-40 as we're heading to Grand Canyon and then on to Monument Valley, we've never been to the latter. Then on to Durango and some altitude and cooler temps. From there we'll head toward Fredericksburg, Tx. to visit with some good friends there.
4500+mi. and lots of diesel but it beats flying, hotels and "having" to eat in restaurants.
Any thoughts you might have will be appreciated.

It will probably be awfully hot that time of year in the SouthWest. Have you considered saving that part for cooler weather? Maybe come up the coast and see the sites of the Pacific Ocean. At least you will have cool weather.

I would take the 118 east to the 210, then take the 210 east to 15. The 15 north. You can pick up 40 east near Barstow. You will miss most of the LA traffic on the 210

The previous poster's advice on how to get to I 40 is great. To get to the 118 from San Diego is easy. As you are going north on I 5, the 405 splits off, take that all the way to the 118. You can also get to the 118 off I 5, either way you are going through the LA traffic, yuk. Try to head north on a Sunday.

As fas as San Diego, we usually stay at the Chula Vista RV Park which is just south of downtown San Diego.

You might check out San Diego RV Resort. I have never stayed there but have stayed at another Sunland RV Resort and it was very nice.

You might consider Santee Lakes Campground about a half hour inland from those camps down by the bay. Inland it will be much warmer but the tradeoff will be well worth it.
Those bayside campgrounds look nice on a map view but probably aren't worth it unless you really want to be bay side.
Campland has a bit of a party reputation especially on weekends. Santa Fe up along Interstate 5 has a high noise level but most people seem to filter it out after while.
There are several Sunland campgrounds along Interstate 8 that are similarly next to a freeway and have some road noise but otherwise are nice parks.

In San Diego I'd go for the Passport park, because I've stayed at the others and they're not so great. I like the Benson area;Caverns/Bisbee/Tombstone for a day trip. I'm not too good at find the best routes in CA, but on the way home on the 40, you need to stop at The Turquoise Room in Winslow, a culinary treat! There are some fine RV parks in Williams, also in Albuquerque right off the 40.

Simi to the I 40 my preference, we live just beyond Simi in Camarillo, is 118 to the 405 north which merges with the 5. Take the 14 north to the 58 east, this is in Mojave. It will take you to the 15 just before the 15/40 split. Easier hills and avoid most of the LA traffic.
If you have a TT membership there is a park out by Otay Lake near Jamala. They also have some sites available to the public, no you do not have to sit through a sales spiel in order to stay, just pay the nightly fee.
