Question,
If, I have to change to a couple of smaller sized panels, how close does the voltages have to be, meaning, identical Voc and Vmp?

BTW: Here is my first "solar project" - placed into operation in 1974 and still partially operational...
Cool! OSCAR 7 ?
VA7RV
Yup...
The "professionals" said it would last for about three years...
It abruptly quit working when it was seven years old, the apparent victim of a meteor hit to both battery packs.
After 21 years of the solar panels trying to charge the shorted batteries, somewhere a fuse blew, taking the batteries off line and allowing the solar panels to power the bird when it is in sunlight.

CamperPaul,
How many worts of power on that beast?
Tia,
Don
The VHF to HF repeater is 2 Watts PEP output, divided between the users.
The UHF to VHF repeater is 8 Watts PEP output, divided between the users.
The solar panels are about 18% efficient but only produce about 50 Watts (24 Volts @ 2 Amps) because of their small size...
The bird is 360 mm (14 in.) high and 424 mm (16.6 in.) in diameter and only 3 of the solar panels receive enough sunlight to be effective at the same time. Whenever the bird is in sunlight, there are always 3 panels in the sun.
When we transported it from the lab to the launch site it was packed in the tub from a Maytag 20 lb. washing machine.

This SITE will give you the optimum angle for tilt.
However, if you run through a bunch of tilt angles, you will see that being 10 degrees from optimum loses only 1.3%, so accuracy is not terribly rewarding.

I get way more change in amps in real life per 10 degrees change in tilt than that 1.3% . Did you mean 10.3% ? My peak amps is 8.2a but it can drop to 7a or less if I am not right on.

Guys thank for the info,
During the testing of my scale roof model, I think I can adjust the #3 panel locations (forward/backwards) for winter time use and not have or very little shadow from the AC or the #3 panel shadowing the #2 panel.

I was just using their figures. I don't get up on the roof much lately. It would be a good idea to do that with a clamp ammeter up there with me, though.
And, yes, I may have lost the decimal point. Slide rules do that.
It's a good point, and I will recheck later.
