Might want to check with your insurance. You will leave the barn 14 feet too long knowing you are breaking the law. Your insurance just might frown on that. In Ca you are allowed 4" (inches) over length tolerance.

Some troopers are assigned to commercial units that look for such violations. I surpervised such a unit in the San Joaquin Valley for two years.

79' translates to "copese" as "write me a ticket" and get tied up until legal. Not a cheap ticket or easy situation to make legal.

Bad idea all around, IMHO.

So I wonder why in the world the builder of the 42' unit did not tell you that you can not possibly tow a 30' trailer with their truck?

This would lead to the question how long of a trailer do you plan on towing? Then we can only build the truck to XX feet long to stay below 65 feet overall or 5 more feet for a 70' overall length.

I would hope that the truck builder would have known the law a little better, and left their customers better informed.

Considering how many people say don't do it, it is amazing how many people are doing it without any issues.

We are 72' and when we go to the races or the sand dunes we are one of the smallest rigs there. It's funny how many of them are out of CA and they are supposed to have some of the strictest laws.

I am sure to regret this as I swore I would never respond to another question concerning overall length of rigs from those who want to tow trailers.

When you leave, understand that you are not going to meet the length requirements in some areas and are subject to being stopped and ticketed. If you are willing to risk it, go for it. Apparently many are doing it and getting away with it. Knowing us, we would get stopped in every State LOL. California is looking for every dime they can get, so don't assume you would get away there.

We were stopped for crossing over the white line in California on the right side of the highway. DH was trying to miss one of their volcano size potholes and was pulled over. A $350. ticket. We fought it but since we did in fact cross over that white line on the highway we were found guilty.

We have talked to many RVrs that have been stopped for not having secondary brakes on their toad with a breakaway "braking wire" connected. No one ever used to be stopped for that offense.

States are looking for money in every place they can get it. So drive illegally at your own risk.

I can tell you this much, if to do go ahead & ride with a rig that big & long, you are being watched & just a mater of time before some officer has the time to do the paper work.
Broke as this country claim to be & countys & states clawing & scratching to screw the America public out of a dollar, yes sir you'll be on the hit list.

A friend not long ago, 4 miles from his house, 36' F650 fun mover & 36' 3 axle enclosed, ol smoke pulled him, $5500.00 worth of tickets + the big orange out of service sticker.
He had CDLs though so it put him in a different class reason it was so bad.
Over length,
no tag on the front bumper,
no fuel stickers,
no name on the cab doors,
few lights didnt work,
no personal insurance card,
no log book,
no weighted tag,
and of all things, smoke told him if any one of the tires didnt have valve stem caps in place, it was an instant $50.00 fine for EACH one missing before he could move the rig.
This was in NC, so heads up if your not legal & traveling NC in an area where theres a big race event about to take place or everybodys leaving from. Ol smokes just doing his job, but it sure is easy pickings on their part.

Try this website: www.towingworld.com/articles/TowingLaws.htm
As I read it you will be illegal in every state except Wyoming. Why in the world would you want to do this?

When we pull our 20' enclosed we are just under 65' !! Really just lucky about that.

Above, are all the posts you will ever need for both the correct info and what to base your decision on. My 2 cents says that 98% of the time, if you are following all traffic laws, your good to go, but, on that one day, when the po po decide to have one of their Zero Tolerance Days, you will have to pay the piper !!

That is what they call "a ticket longer than a witch's dream"!
