So I know that optima batteries are very good. My buddy gave me a red top optima for free. My question is, is the red top a good deep cycle batter for my TT?

It depends on what size it is based on what I reseached a few years back. Then the Group 31 battery was the same battery and all the color difference meant was style of post/connectors.

Get the plate count specs and if they are the same and the batteries weigh the same then all would be equal.

Due to their low output rating they all seem to be more DC like than starting battery like. They are popular for off road useds because they can take a beating and not short out.

Optma says: "RV - Roughing it isn’t what it used to be – from the cappuccino maker to the blow dryer your RV needs power and the average battery isn’t going to get the job done. The BlueTop provides longer life, doesn’t leak and gets you back on the road quicker because they recharge faster. Bringing the comforts of home into the wilderness is a no-brainer with a BlueTop. Enjoy life beyond the plug-ins."

Now how they come up with all that, I don't know.

Actually, both of my hybrid 55AHs have 750CCA. How many 48lb batteries have that?

That is hardly a DC spec.

I agree based on those numbers.

Ok, one more thing. My TT is used a couple time each month, parked and plugged in at my home(never stored). I guess im just wondering......I bought the trailer used, when I got it home I smelled rotten eggs really bad. I checked the battery and it was steaming. I had a interstate battery from my 91 toyota pick up(that needs an alternator now)and put that on the TT. It has been fine for the last several months but, I have this Optima just sitting around and was thinking it might be a better fit. What say ye?

A semi sealed battery should be cleaner than the flooded lead acid battery.

just get a real deep cycle battery. if you continue to use starting batteries, you'll keep having issues.
unless you always camp with hookups, then go ahead and use what you got.

AGM batteries, like your Red-top, do not leak when set on their side. They are VRLA, where the VR means Valve Regulated. Each cell has a pressure relief valve that keeps the acid inside during use.

This also means you will not have any of that white chalky stuff to clean up around the terminals.

The major objection I have with Optima batteries is their price versus their capacity.
They are made with curved plates which will hold up better to vibration and shock loading than your regular flat plate battery, But the manufacturing cost is quite a bit higher. Which translates into a higher selling price per amp.
Also that for any equal sized battery..ie group 24, group 27, etc they have apx 70 percent of the capacity in amps as your "regular" AGM or flooded cell battery.
Since I have no intension of taking an RV offshore boating or motocross racing I'll stick with the lower cost AGM's like Concorde/Lifeline or regular flooded deep cycles.
