Looking for some advice. I currently own a Class C and am considering buying a DP. Is it more advantageous to sell out right or should I trade the Class C in on the new coach?

Sell it yourself if you can. Deal on the new unit without any distractions.

I'll presume TX charges sales tax on the price difference. If your C has some reasonable value as a trade in, the sales tax savings could make a trade in more valuable than selling it yourself.

So far we've always asked dealer what they would give as tradein. We then try to sell it ourselves for more than that instead of trading in. Always been successful, once even with a Class C.

It also depends how comfortable one would be in selling their own unit.
When the dealer we were recently working with gave us the trade in price we opted to sell it ourselves. RV dealers are in business not to lose money as all business' are.
With that we sold our unit for $5,300 more than the trade in figure and were 'comfortable'.
Oh...and the price on the new 5ver was $7,000 less than our local dealer so.....

I'd sell. You'll get more than you will as a trade in.

Hmmm it really depends...
What price range of a DP are you looking at? How much is the Class C worth (NADA)? How much are you willing to take for it? How much will the dealer give you for it? How much are you wanting to pay for the DP from the dealer? Do you want to wait(possibility)? Do you have the time or want to deal with people calling, coming by to look at, do the paperwork (hoping it's right), wait for a check to clear, etc?
There can be a lot of variables to the situation. Theoretically a person would make more money selling it outright. But they would also work more too. A dealer may give you what you want for it (maybe not what it's worth).
I would:
1) Look up the value (NADA)
2) Decide how much I want for it (lowest I would be willing to go). Are you willing to go below book value? If so, by how much?
3) Find out what the bottom line price would be on the DP if you were purchasing without a trade in. Don't mention trade in.
4) Find out how much dealer will give you for trade (haggle some).
5) Weigh the options. Is there a significant difference in the price difference? Is it worth the difference of dealing with the aspects of advertising, answering calls, meeting with people to look at it, deal with the paperwork and money? If so, then you will know your answer...
Every situation is not the same, nor is everyone's willingness to have to put extra effort into it. Go with what you will be satisfied with.

The difference in sales tax will very seldom make up for the difference in sales price of your used unit. You are much better off selling the unit yourself.

I doubt there is a cut and dried answer to the OP's question. The idea of "willing buyer - willing seller" is all important in trying to sell anything. Especially in the economy we are in today, in the US. Trying to sell an RV or a house can be a frustrating experience for many. Some people enjoy selling themselves, they enjoy the contacts, the haggling with others, etc.
But realistically, how many people in Weatherford Texas are in the market to buy a used Class C? Even though Weatherford is about 20 miles west of Fort Worth, many people won't drive 20 miles to look at one.
Looking into putting it on a consignment lot in the Dallas/Fort Worth area would get a lot more people seeing it and checking it out. Also in todays market, at least around here, people looking at private sales are mostly bargainin shopping. If they can get something cheap enough, they will buy it but other wise, you end up with a lot of tire kickers at your house.
Often times, I feel serious buyers will look at the dealer's lots first. If for nothing else to see the asking price, condition, warranty offered (if any), return privileges, etc.
If time is of essence, to the seller, this may effect the decision. How soon do you want the DP? Can you afford or are willing to buy the DP while waiting for the Class C to sell at your house? I have seen many RVs, boats, houses, etc. set on the market around here for over a year, listed by the owner. yes, if it sells, you may get a better price, but there is no guarantee it will sell. Once the dealer takes it in on trade, it is out of the OPs hair at that time and he/she can get on with the purchase of the DP.
So many variable, I don't believe there is any one answer, that fits all individual situations. If I was interested in changing out one of our RVs, and wasn't in any big hurry, I would try to sell it myself in a set time frame. At the end of that time frame, one month, two months or whatever, I would trade it in or put it on a consignment lot.
