I am looking to invest in a 50 amp surge protector this year. In my opinion I think it is best to hard wire one in. Has anyone done this? If so where did they install it?

Also suggestions on one would be great.

Thanks
Bryan

If unit fails you are up a creek, I was strongly recommended by many not to hard wire.

If you meant surge protector then I wouldn't. If you meant a full power protector like the PI HW50C then they can (and have in my case) protect the rig equipment.

In my last rig it was mounted near the ATS and no cutting of wires was involved. It was a simple restoration of the original wiring as I moved it to the current rig in a similar position.

excellent point, one should always use the term "full function surge protector" to avoid having folks buy the $90 model and think they are safe. one can always buy a hard wired one and rig it up with M/F pigtails and make it removable.

Here's my installation on the prior rig. The ATS is on the left and the small data cable goes to the remote.

Here's a comparison chart I found that may offer you a good comparison between surge protector and EMS system.
surge/EMS comparison chart.

I have the PI EMS PT50C. I like the idea that the EMS is outside, so if it take a major hit, it is at the post and not inside.
