This may be old news but it works for us.
At our camp we would take a small Tupperware glass with a lid and freeze it either on its side or upside down. This stays in the freezer in an upright position. When we go in the freezer you can see in an instant if the water has thawed and re frozen. At our camp we actually use a 1 gal. Jug. That way we have an idea how long the power had been out.

Most modern RV fridges automatically revert to propane when the AC cuts out - your approach would have worked with my last fridge but not with the current one.

Having a bit of a hard time figuring out what problem you're solving. do you loose power often where you camp or am I missing something. ksg5000 is correct though as all modern fridges will automatically make the switch to LP if they loose power (unless it's 12 volt power they're loosing). Fridge needs 12 volt power when operating in EITHER mode.

We have an Acu-Rite wireless puck for outdoor temp measurement. When I want to know how the refer is doing I put the puck in the freezer or the refigerator.

True, but it still works great in the home freezer while you are gone in the RV. You don't have to wonder if the freezer quit working because of a power loss while you were away.
Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had to kill because they pissed me off.

Sorry for the confusion.
At our hunting camp in rural mississippi the power is not reliable and the camp is unoccupied except on weekends. We were having trouble with food thawing and refreezing without knowing it. We would take it out, thaw it only to find it was rancid.
This would apply to my RV or anyone else who like me does not leave the gas on when it is at the house.

I remember someone on here leaves a penny on top of one of the ice cubes in the tray. If the freezer thaws out, the penny will sink into the cube.

If the power is that unreliable and you are having the sort of issues you are describing I would not leave anything in the frig and restock each time you use the trailer. I sure would not depend on trying to tell if food was "rancid" since it could still appear and smell good, but still make you extremely sick or worse.

I simply put an ice cube on the bottom/shelf and see if it's still there when we're back.

This is what I do as well. We have a lot of hurricanes and tropical storms to deal with. You never know how long the power was out when you get back. An ice cube left on the bottom of the freezer will tell you if it was too long.
