When camping ,after droping camper. What do you use for a tailgate? Went to A+A Auto today ,wanted to get a reasonable temporary tailgate. They quoted 480 dollars for one,not a real gate.So im thinking of other ideas. Maybee cargo net ,but wanted more like a plastic insert. Im sure not paying that much. When camping for a few weeks it wouldbe nice to have for laundry baskets ,groceries, wood ect.Anyone know of any maybee $150 or so?

If you're going to purchase an actual tail gate why not just use the one you have?
I too have bought a used tailgate for $50. This was after I smashed mine against a tree.
I haven't found need for a tailgate when camping. I put things in the bed near the front and strap or tie them down if necessary. I can't imagine hauling enough firewood where you would be concerned with it falling out the back.
If you feel you need something I would look at a cargo net. These were popular a few years ago when people thought replacing their tailgate with one would save some gas. Auto parts stores may have one. They're lightweight and easy to wad up and store in a cabinet.

What tailgate? Usually the bed of the truck remains empty once the tailgate is off till such time that the camper goes back on while traveling. I do reinstall the tailgate once the camper is home after a trip.

Though, I have been debating getting one of those mesh tailgates.

Cabela's has a nice bar that rachets tight to hold things against the wall. It can't that expensive because have it and we're fairly "frugal".

I am going to fab one out of 1 1/4" tube steel and design it so it nests inside the plywood risers in the bed. Right now the camper rides on 2 3/4" sheets. I will post some pics when it is done. I hate not having an enclosed bed when the camper is off. Too many toys that want to roll around, not to mention the lack of privacy.

On my old Chevy I ran it for a long time without a tailgate, since it was missing when I got the truck. I welded an about 18" long piece of 2" x 1" c-channel to each side of the pickup box right in front of where the tailgate normally goes, oriented vertically with the legs of the channel pointing in. Then I slid a couple of 2x6 boards down into the slots made by the c-channels. That was my tailgate for a few years until I found a good used one for cheap. I have a similar setup that I welded on my utility trailer, since it didn't have a rear gate on it when I got it. I slide a 2x12 into the channels at the rear of the trailer.

it may sound redneck to some but go to your local lumber yard or big box store, get a $5.oo 2x12 board, have it cut to fit just inside your bed and there you go, a cheap tailgate. If you dont want to take it with you to the next location, firewood or just throw it on the floor of the tc, wont take up much space and alot lighter than a tailgate. Buy some cheap paint if you feel the need.
