Op here. I talked to a Honda dealer who said they had both the CARB and non-CARB ones and the CARB ones cost about $80 dollars more. He said that the CARB one has a seamless fuel tank and a different cap to control venting - although he couldn't explain what was different about the venting.
It seems to me that the seamless fuel tank would be a plus. Don't know about the venting. I am leaning towards getting the CARB model.

The Canadian models have a vent that you can close. I like this because mine lives in my rear toolbox.

When I bought mine a few years ago there were two differences in the cap for the California model. First, the cap is on a tether so it cannot get lost, allowing the fuel to evaporate. Second, the cap has a click feature similar to the gas cap on newer vehicles to insure that it is tightened properly to again address the evaporation issue. At the time I bought mine these were the only differences between the two models. The California model still has the operable vent.

$80 more to protect you from yourself,----yeah, ok. If thats worth it to you, go ahead and get the CARB model. It is nice to have a choice though.

They're often called "49-state" vs. "50-state" models, referring to if it can be sold in all 50 states or just 49 states (not for sale in California). They are also known as CARB models, as they meet California Air Resources Board rules, or non-CARB models. The differences are:
• CARB models have a larger fuel cap to house a charcoal "donut" to filter evaporative emissions from the fuel tank when the fuel vent is open.
• CARB models have a fuel cap that "clicks" to indicate to the operator the cap is closed properly, as well as preventing it from being overtightened.
• CARB models have a tethered fuel cap to prevent the OEM cap from being lost and possibly replaced with a non-compliant aftermarket fuel cap.
• Both CARB and 49-states models have fuel vent valves on the fuel caps.
• 49-state models have a sticker and carton marked "Not for sale in California"

rabid rod, that is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Is there any truth to the statement a Honda vendor telling me that the CARB model has a seamless fuel tank?

Ken, IMO I would still buy the cheaper genny anyway. Besides, you don't live in Calif. Why would you need a CARB compliant genny?

It is my understanding the construction method is the same, but the 50-state model's fuel tank has more layers of material to help reduce evaporative emissions. These extra layers reduce the fuel tank capacity a tiny bit, from 1.1 gallons to 0.95 gallons.

Thanks again rabid rob. I decided to get the CARB model. Ordered it this morning from a California dealer and got it for less than the other internet dealers are selling the non- CARB models for. I pondered the reduced fuel capacity, but for my use that won't be an issue. On the plus side, the thicker tank and the charcoal filter in the cap sold me.
