The Honda Accord up to 2004 is towable 4 down and is more roomy than the CRV I believe. I have the Ex with a 24 valve six cylinder engine and it is very peppy.
Total miles is about 200,000 with 60,000 towed.

I quit printing at 13 pages---------also looked up other Grand Cherokee models------same type of concerns.
Was the problem with JEEPS...or the GRAND CHEROKEE models???

If you want to save on fuel, both RV and toad, consider a smart car from Mercedes, or a used one. They're fun to drive two seaters with room for groceries or baggage and are extremely safe. They tow four down in 'N' with the key in #1 position; doors being locked with the other key. They weigh 1800 lbs, so you might not need a brake kit if you have a DP of any size.

I agree they seem to be popular but to me far from one of the best?
There are too many models to say "best"
I find the jeep model(original jeep cj type) way way overpriced
I really like the 2012 wagoneer though but hard to compare a 2005 TJ
to a 2012 Grand wagoneer even though they are both jeeps

X 2 for the HHR. Not expensive. Good gas mileage. Plenty of room (I'm 6'3" and 230 lbs) and no problems with towing 4 wheels down.

also vote for the Honda CR-V. We put 2 kayaks on top and with the rear seats down carry a lot on gear in the CRV, golf clubs, weight machine, chairs etc. tows like nothing behind you.

I agree..Honda CR-V... light, compact, reliable, economical, good ride, room for 5 and 4x4 system. I had a Jeep Wrangler, can't beat the cool and fun factor but, sold because I didn't like the ride, noise and mpg. Bought my used 06 CRV as towed and now we use it daily. Good luck with your search.

I found the Jeep Wrangler a little too cramped for me (6'3" and 225#) Towed a Honda Pilot (nice but heavy) a Volvo xc90 (on a dolly) and a Saturn Vue. Of all of them, the vue was the lightest and roomiest of all and hod gobs of power. My 2006 still had the Honda engine. I sold it when I went back to work and didn't need a dedicated toad, but just bought an '08 Vue, v6 AWD and am setting it up as a toad for next year's re-retirement. Since these cars are "orphans" the prices are good. I bought this one on e-bay for $11,500 with 24000 miles. It has a "rebuilt" title, but since I didn't buy it for resale, I didn't care. I have already installed the base plate and will install the tail-light wiring this weekend.

The best thing is to take all the choices given and drive each of the vehicles, then decide which one you like best. All of the vehicles given plus a bunch more will make good toads, but it's really up to you what you like.
When I started looking for a toad, based on recommendations, I was ready to buy a CR-V, then I went to the LA car show where they had all the vehicles I was interested in, in one place. I got to sit in all of them and check out the fit and finish. I was very disappointed when I sat in the CR-V and my back immediately started hurting. The lumbar was just wrong for me.
I ended up narrowing it down to the Jeep Liberty and the Vue, about the same weight and price, and ended up with the Liberty and have been happy with it.
While at the car show I saw the Edge for the first time and really liked it but it was many $K more than the Liberty so I passed on it. I recently had a chance to get a good deal on an Edge, so and on Monday it will be set up to be towed.
I got home a couple of days ago from Quartzsite and was amazed by the number of Libertys I saw there.
