Stopped by the local Ford dealer on the way home. Wanted to pick up this magical "Transfer Case FLuid" that Ford is now specifying in the owners manual. So I walk up to the parts counter and asked the young man for three quarts. By the way, how much a quart? That will be $10 a quart, sir. Holly mackeral. Yes, I know it is a safe bet that what is contained in that black plastic bottle is nothing more than some flavor of Mercon auto tranny fluid, but since the truck is still under the powertrain warranty it is always best to have receipts that show the proper lubricants are used. I was lucky that he sold it to me for the wholesale price of $8.50 a quart. With the price of this stuff and the price of Motorcraft SP/LV even do it yourself is getting expensive. I will be searching online for the next drain and fill.

It's not just Ford. GMC is requiring this new 'grade' of oil (Dexos) that is more expensive than some full synthetics. They say that it is because of the 'direct injection' fuel injection system.

Geez...Royal Purple is only $21 at Advance!
Glad I don't need any of that special stuff...regular 75W-140 gear oil, Dexron-Mercon ATF, and regular oil from Wal-mart are just fine.

My VW Jetta requires VW502 fully synthetic. Its about 10$ a quart and that little inline five uses about 6.2 quarts.

So true...when at SunLabs, one of the scientists said they only
change a 'bit' of the spec to make it 'special' and is then a custom
from their OEM lube supplier.
Some times real metrics, but most times a marketing ploy to get more $$$$
He is a chem engineer at Chevron for decades till he had enough and
we hired him
The after market stuff is looking better all the time and the only
criteria for me is that they certify compliance with whatever
is on the label of the custom stuff
Is Amsoil publicly traded? Thinking am going to buy some of their stock...
Same thing happened to the hub assemblies. Started in the early 90's
or so when Timken hatched a new product line where the hub/bearings/ABS sensor/etc
were all 'one' piece so that the auto OEMs only ordered, stocked and
installed 'one' component...
Try buying just one or even both of the bearings...
Over at my Sub forum a guy even took one apart. Found the bearing
number impressed on the race. Contacted everyone he could and finally
Timken. They acknowledged that, that number was a good one, but it was
NOT available as a component for sale
