Our DVD player finally croaked. Too many trailer miles perhaps. Shopping Amazon for a new unit. My question is will Blu Ray players all play DVD? We have heard they will with less hang ups as we had with old DVD player. What's the scoop? Honestly I looked elsewhere to find tis answer but could not. Thanks much.

All Blu Ray's I have seen will play DVD's. For me, I truely can't tell the difference when watching one or the other on my Vizio LED TV.

Depends on how you have it hooked up/ If you are using a standard coax, then no no difference. If you use the three wire or a HDMI you will see a difference.

I replaced my standard DVD player with a Bluray DVD player two years ago. No problem playing either type with the new one.

All Blu-ray players will play DVDs; that is a fact. The best output connection for a Blu-ray is via an HDMI cable; it's the only way you can get 1080p resolution from a Blu-ray disc. If you install a Blu-ray where you used to have a DVD player, be aware of the fact that there will not be a coax output in case that is what you had been using.

When a Blu-ray plays a DVD, if it is connected with an HDMI cable it will "upconvert" the picture. It can't make the picture any better than it was, but it will display the maximum resolution of the DVD, which, I believe is 480i. It will look better than standard definition TV looks on your HDTV.

It's harder to tell on small screens than larger one's. Like another person mentioned, you need to use the HDMI cable otherwise the picture gets scaled down to DVD quality.

Also would recommend thinking about Blu-Ray with wireless internet capability if you even think about downloading movies, ie Netflix, or Pandora music. Also, for upgrading firmware on the Blu-Ray.
