2 interstate 6v, 8 yrs old performing very good yet, hydrometer readings very near even.
But even a year ago, one of them just loves to corrode the terminals.
I have cleaned all terminals thoroughly a couple times, but the one still insists on corroding very rapidly,....like in a couple months or less.
I know there is probably no way of stopping this.....short of replacing,......just wondered what the cause mite be, being as they are still performing well ?

That's good work keeping those 6s going for so long.
ISTR a thread on this a while back and mex saying that the posts get loose sometimes and leak up. Those round pads might help.

Hi RJ,
Felt washers made from wool do help--also the anti corrosion spray from your local general motors store (recommendation from mexbungalows).

I have found that as batteries age, they will charge more and that will cause the corrosion, usually near the negative terminals. Corrosion will form on the metal parts close to the source. You could try coating the parts with dielectric grease. Before the use of dielectric grease we would coat the parts with normal chassis grease, but made sure that no grease got on the contact points, as it would break the electrical connection.

Rinse with lots of water for minimum 15 minutes to remove the bulk. Then I use a spray terminal cleaner. Maybe two applications and let it sit a bit before you rinse and dry between applications. Treat the wire connections - lugs also.
Reconnect again and spray with battery terminal protectant. I use Permatex brand cleaner and protectant. (separate products) Most auto stores should have it or similar.
Good chance the seal around the terminal is busted so be sure the spray protectant gets down in that area.
Good luck, YMMV.

It was a year ago from mex--
"If I may add a bit of wisdom and product of school of hard knocks regarding battery corrosion prevention. A mini class so to speak...
This pertains to flooded lead acid batteries...
The lid seal between the lead/antimony terminal or post and the plastic case is not gas tight. Couple that with heating and chilling and you end up with a leak that admits corrosive gas from underneath the battery wire lug. You can spray the terminal from the top all you want and it will do little good against corrosion sneaking up from underneath.
As Pianotuna said, felt donut gaskets should be slipped over clean and shiny bright battery posts and down flush with the battery lid.
Next is a secret. Few felt terminal donut gaskets contain enough corrosion preventative oil to do much good. Here's what I do:
Once the felt post washer is pushed down flush with the lid, spray the heck out of the washer with corrosion preventative spray. Soak it and don't worry about the spray getting onto the battery post. IT WILL NOT CAUSE A CONNECTION PROBLEM once the cables are clamped on. SPRAY THAT CORROSION PREVENTATIVE!
I like General Motors corrosion spray sold at GM dealers parts counters
Barring that LPS-3 (NOT LPS-2 or LPS 1, Only LPS-3) will stop corrosion.
Many parts house corrosion sprays are garbage, stick with something that will save you from many headaches and dollars lost fixing corroded cables. If a spray does not eventually dry with a "gummy" or "waxy" feel to it, it will not work or work for long. WAX is a principle part of sealing out corrosion. If the spray contains no wax it is junk.
Perfectly clean wire and terminals, set upon a perfectly clean battery post and lid, that has had a felt sealing washer saturated with a top quality corrosion spray, and then had corrosion spray meticulously applied to the assembled connection WILL OUTLAST THE LIFE OF THE BATTERY EVEN IF THAT MAY BE TEN YEARS!
I have treated hundreds of motorhome and cruising sailboat battery banks using this technique and have never subsequently encountered that battery bank having corrosion, even if many years have passed. The process is a "near miracle" (a rating I reserve for something truly outstanding)
GOOGLE "LPS-3" to see what the aerosol can looks like and perhaps where to purchase it. "

The felt washers need to be right down on the battery case for best results. I think they are primarily designed for standard automotive terminals. GC2 terminals may not be an easy drop it on install.

That is the problem with flooded wet cells.. You have to clean them often.
However given the lower cost and longer life.. Worth it.

I've found a coating of Dielectric Grease on both terminals prevents most corrosion build up because it is a non conducting grease. I believe that is the coating on those red/green felt washers sold for the purpose of preventing corrosion build up.

Hope this passes the censor...
A non-profit website may publish a short piece on battery corrosion that I wrote recently.
http://www.rversonline.org
And there is a manufacturer that sells an additive that is added to the electrolyte to suppress gassing, corrosion and water loss,
http://www.thermoil.com
It would make sense to add this stuff to a new or nearly new flooded lead acid battery.
