I personally have never understood the NEED to see raw sewage.
Been running RV's for 20 years now without having to view my sewage! I have no clear anythings on my sewage lines and I have clean working tanks and sensors.
What is behind that black cap is a y-pipe that is empty until you pull a lever for the gray or black. Pull the levers 'first' than open the cap....well sometimes you just can't fix stupid.

The clear caps are more meant to be able to watch the tank flusher so that you can see when nothing but clear water is running out to ensure that the tank is fully flushed.

Yes I'm aware of that. Don't own a flusher either! When I dump when possible, and it doesn't interfere with others waiting in line, after the dump I fill both tanks with water and dump again. When hooked up I will fill with water twice after dumping. Just saying I don't think its always necessary to buy newfangle add on's.

I check the valve before I take the cap off. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

The point is that someone may have opened your valves and then closed them without you knowing about it as a nasty prank...(or snagged the handle on something - I could see that possibly happening with our camper)...
...it would certainly be an unpleasant surprise if it happened...
...that being said, I wasn't aware that this was a significant concern...
I think I prefer to worry about 1/2 ton vs. 3/4 ton tow vehicles, diesel vs. gas, 6V vs. 12V batteries and the price of gas.

I have the clear section just to make sure there is nothing in the pipe before I pull the cap off. Don't tell me no one has ever had a valve fail, or leak a bit and get a sudden surprise of the nasty kind, just seems to make sense to me to see if it is clear before pulling the plug. Kind of like checking to make sure the power is off before checking the wiring.
Seems pretty "clear" to me. Better safe than sorry.

Except that one might kill you while the other might call for a little soap and water.

Caution about the clear sewer fittings. They are made of acyclic hence they are breakable. This past season I broke a new $19 10" straight extension by dropping it on the grass. I've never broken a black PVC fitting.
Outrageous that for $19 they could not have made it out of a unbreakable polycarbonate.
