I am researching travel trailers and would like to hear about how others feel about their slide-outs. I understand the pros are 'extra space and comfort', but I have heard many negatives to having slide-outs. I would love to hear what everyone has to say about them.
Thank you!

We have had 3 trailers now over the past 7 years all with slide outs and not problems. Would never be without them.

We went from having a 24 foot no slide TT to 27 foot single slide TT to a 39 foot fiver with 3 slides. Slides are like potato chips, you can't just have one!

No slide.
21T Komfort. Heavy frame ,slightly higher ceiling.
Bigger windows and 5 skylights.
We use our trailer often in unimproved type campgrounds and sometimes boondocking. One our friends bought a lightweight trailer with a slide and it did not hold up.
This is my 4th RV which is now 9 years old and we have kept longer than any other. I have had 2 bigger with slides and one smaller.
We take advantage of the fact that we can just stop in a beautiful spot and have full use of our trailer with no effort.
Oddly enough we have parked it at Outdoor Resorts in Cathedral City for a month at a time , 2 different times. We were the smallest rig there and our rent was 75% of the going rate because they have a few sites that are not made for slide-outs and were available in high season.
I like the fact that this thing is solid. 7200# GVW on the axles and the actual weight is more like 5000-5300# on the axles loaded with 56 gallons of water and our supplies.

Diadvantages include extra weight and possible interference with use of the interior when the slides are retracted as well as extra cost. Potential problems include additional places for leaks to develope, an additional complicated mechanical system, and structural issues.

That being said, we love the extra room our slide gives us, and the next trailer will probably have a second one in the bedroom ....

for what we want I doubt I'd find a trailer meeting or needs w/o slideouts. We've camped in ours in pouring rain, high winds an no problems.

However, for us a trailer with slideouts it MUST HAVE the following accessibility WITH THE SLIDES IN
1) bedroom, bathroom, kitchen sink, dinette, fridge, microwave, food storage
2) I MUST be able to pull in all the slides at night and be comfortable for sleeping if we want so we are prepped to take off first thing in the AM

the trailer we have now fits our needs and is very useable with the slides in for rest/lunch stops.

We were very suprised in how many trailers with slides are completely unusable with the slides in. We want to stop for lunch etc. and be able to use the trailer basics. One trailer plan wouldn't let you get to the fridge, bathroom, or any of the kitchen or pantry with the slides in. AND one slide had to be completely out to ope the fridge. Really messes up a lunch stop.

The last TT that we had for 10 years had one large slideout 4ft by 14ft and never had one second of problem with the slideout. Will never buy another RV without one or two

For me it's all about the extra room. My truck won't pull a bigger TT but I bought what I did because the slide gave me a ton more room and yet it's light enough that my truck is fine pulling it. This being my first RV with a slide I can't comment about the reliability or problems but I'm sure it's much like everything else, if you maintain it and take care of it it'll last you a while. Before my current set up I had a 18' HTT with no slide and even for two people it was tough to both be inside and not trip over each other. Then throw into that mix a 9yr old and a dog.........you get the picture. I feel that every RV I'd buy from this point on will have a slide.

I would hate to think of going back to no slides. The extra space gained with slides makes a HUGE difference. I have not had a single issue with the slides.
