You don't have to rotate the whole jack. loosen a couple of set screws on the bottom of the head a twist it to the position you want. I turned mine to the drivers side and the tailgate cleared the motor fine.

when i said i rotated mine 180 degrees, i meant the motor head, not the jack itself.
here's a pic:

i'm able to drop the tailgate down without hitting the motor.

since you are talking about a SUV's hatch door, vs. a truck's tailgate, you may not be able to solve this.
what WDH are you using?

If you extend the hitch on the tow vehicle it will "De-rate" it capacity wise, From the looks of the system you have, This may very well be a very bad thing.

Ok it took a little doing but I managed to rotate the gear head.
The holes were there but had not been threaded. Took me a while to figure that out
I went and picked up a tap and dropped one of my rare earth magnets down the hole to catch the shavings. By the way that works great if you don't want to disassemble something and need to file, grind or thread in it. As long as it is not aluminum or stainless that is.
My darn driveway sloops so bad to get it level I ran the jack screw out of it's nut. Had to lift the tongue with my floor jack to get the screw to re ingage. Oh well lesson learned. Now ther is a reference mark around the lower extension tube. If you see it STOP!

Not correct and as I have said give us a reference other than just your non-engineer opinion.

There are longer shanks for weight distributing hitches if all you need is a couple of inches of clearance. I don't think use an extended shank derates a weight distributing hitch. If you use a hitch extender then that certainly does derate.

Here is a link to eTrailer that shows a 7" hitch extension.

Below is the specification that states that a hitch extension can derate the hitch reciever up to 50%

Bad example and not what I or others are talking about and what you showed is actually a receiver extension and not a longer drawbar. Those tublar extensions as I mentioned do have a derated wt.
