We picked up our new trailer this week. When I got home I realized the back hatch of my tow vehicle will not clear the power head on the jack. My hitch has 12 ¾” ball to pin dimension. My question is. Is this a standard among manufacturers? Or does anyone make a hitch assembly with about 15” from ball to pin. These extra few inches would allow my rear hatch to open.

I never get lost! Someone always tells me where to go!

It is possible but would require cutting and welding.
Might be warranty issues doing that.

I turned the head 90 degrees on mine so the tailgate would lay down.

Thing about those extra inches. They will change all of your weights, and how the WDH transfers them. My WDH has a 1200lb hole, and a 1000lb hole. they are only 1 1/2 inch apart. So 1 1/2 inch changes things 200lbs. You could just do like most of us. Load the rear of the TV before hooking up. I can't get my Tailgate down hooked up. So I do every thing I need to do back there. Befor hooking up.

Try putting the jack down, and then open the hatch. Once the jack is on the ground, the angle will change a little bit, bringing up the tow vehicle, and it should open.

Also did they tell you the safe way to hitch and unhitch the weight distribution bars? If you raise the jack about 6", then the bars go on with little problem, and you do not risk breaking your arm in the process. Just don't overtighten an extra link because it is easy to install.

Thanks for all the replies. I will look into rotating the jack 120 degrees (3) hole pattern. If that does not do the trick they make a shank that is 1 1/4" longer by the same company. I might get that.
I'm spoiled! I need to be able to get in the back of my Sequoia when we stop for gas or what ever ;-)

Actually most TV receivers are spec'd, or at least used to be, for 10" from the center of the ball to the hitch pin. So if rating was 1000# tongue weight, and you extend ball by 2", your tongue weight spec DECREASES to 833#. Be careful what you do. You may need to buy a different class of receiver.

Instead of just saying something give us an actual reference to this mythical 10" since IMO it's just that ... mythical. You can buy drawbars up to 16" or 18" and unless they have two holes in them they are rated the same as the shorter drawbars. No receiver AFAIK has any conditions on the length of the drawbar used. If you know of one please post a link stating this limitation on the drawbar length, but I won't hold my breath, because it just doesn't exist AFAIK. I have been using a longer drawbar to be able to open the back doors on my Vans since 1981 w/o issues.

Read carefully THIS THREAD and the info that BarneyS got from Equal-i-zer on this very question and be careful to separate that info from these "tube type" extensions that do in fact have a derated wt. capacity.
