We are planning our cross country trip from Washington state to Maine. We will be leaving early to mid June to be in Houlton, Maine for the Fourth of July. What are the recommendations for reserving campsites for known places to stay, or just free-wheeling it and trying to find a spot with open sites near where you end up driving? Pulling a 35' 5th wheel, following I-90 most of the way.

Depends on whether you want to stay in a high traffic park or not. If you want to stay in Yellowstone for example you better have reservations and make them well ahead. If you are just looking for a spot to spend a night or two, then you'll find someplace without a lot of trouble.
Near holidays of course it can be hard to find any spots.

Trying to follow your reservation schedule is not the best way to travel. As said above, wing it, unless holidays, attractions and possibly weekends get in your way.

I disagree and for example we will be doing a KW around Fl. trip starting in Apr of this year and the KOAs in St. Augustine and Titusville are already booked for 1/2 of their sites and we made our ressies for Boyd's in KW last month since we wanted a water front site.
Of course most of our stays are for 4 or 5 days at a place so we can adjust things since we have plenty of "SLOP" in our schedule.
We always try and make a ressies two or three days in advance so we know we have a place to pull into that suits our camping style.

If you are flexible & can plan to arrive at a campground early in the day (at least before 1:00PM) reservations are rarely needed. The exceptions are popular state & national parks on holidays. For example, I arrived at the South campground in Zion on May 11th at 10:00AM & there were only 2 sites left. Within 15 minutes it was full, however there were still sites available at the commercial campgrounds outside the park.
On the other hand, I managed to get a unreserved site at Apgar in Glacier National Park over the 4th of July weekend, and a week later at St Mary campground, a reservable campground on the other side of Glacier.
Again, I prefer not to make reservations. If it is a popular weekend I may call ahead in the morning to a campground I expect to reach be the afternoon, but I'm willing to deal with an occasional difficulty finding the "perfect" campsite for the flexibility of being able to stop & spend time at "discoveries" along the way.

If I want to be assured of a site at the destination of my trip, I will do a
rough guess of how many days I will be on the road with about 3 days built in for "whatever", then I will make a reservation at the destination campground of my choice. On the road, it depends on how many miles we traveled that day and
usually at lunch we have a fair idea how much farther we want to travel and start looking in the campground book (or I have already preplanned for several c/gs and choose one of the those.) I call ahead and make a reservation then or they might say "come on in." Only 2 nights since 1992 have I been stuck and then Cracker Barrel came through for us.

I make reservations at my destination. Enroute I just wing it using Free Campgrounds, Free Campsites, Casino Camper and others.

It goes without saying that you need reservations for the Fourth of July. Other than that, you should be fine.
