I brought 6 or 8 bottles of vanilla back from Mexico several years ago with no problems. I think Mexican vanilla has a higher alcohol content than most of the vanilla sold in the US. All I know for sure is it has a great flavor.

You can make your own vanilla by adding 2 or 3 split open vanilla beans to a bottle of vodka, however, I prefer Jim Beam. The longer the bottle sits with the beans in it, the better. Add another bean to the existing beans and fill with the libation of your choice when the 1st bottle is empty. I've had my current bottle going for about 6 years now.

Mexican "vanilla" is made from coal tar and other chemicals plus extract from the tonka tree bean which contains coumarin , a blood thinner. It may also harm the liver. It has be banned in the US since the 1950s.

The links that Gemstone put in the posts above are very interesting. READ BEFORE YOU BUY!

Thanks to all who posted. I have been taking vanilla back from Progresso for many years, but a couple times a customs inspector questioned me when I had a case, told me only 3 or 4 bottles were allowed, but when I asked other inspectors they did not know of any law pertaining to quanity. So i think there are some inspectors that want to show there authority when they have a badge on. Just my opinion. Thanks for your answers.

If you can trust anything they say, go for it.

Guess I know nothing about vanilla, but last time we were in Progresso, I looked at a bottle of "Pure Vanilla". But looking at the label of ingredients, I saw many big chemical, scary, words and never saw "vanilla" listed anywhere in the ingredients.

Watkins Double Strength. The Best; makes chocalte chip cookies taste great and I am a consumer. Go to: Watkins Products and check it out, a bit more expensive but worth every drop. And there is no such thing as Pure Vanilla; it's to unstabe and will evaporate. Irover
