Been in Calgary my whole life, and to be honest the only time the stampede isn't going to be too bad is on bad weather days, even still you'd be amazed at the amount of people still on the grounds.. Oh yeah, and avoid weekends.
At any rate, you HAVE to experience, do not let the "crowds" scare you off. The only place it would really affect you is on the rides. That's where the lineups are.

We stayed at the Lake Louise Hardsided campground and then went on to the CochraneBow Rivers Edge campground. One of the nicest campgrounds we have stayed in. The town of Cochrane was great. Lots to do especially if you are there on Canada Day.

Re Stampede Visit: Spring Hill Campground is OK but Bow Rivers Edge (in Cochrane) is just as nice and closer to the train, closer to groceries, closer to Calgary etc. Not knocking Spring Hill, just giving you an alternative.
