Not a Duramax owner, never been a brand loyalist, wouldn't shock me if you didn't need any more repairs for 200,000mi.

Weird stuff happens, they fixed it, I'd bet you're good to go for a long time...

Gee, I've got a Dodge (see sig) & it's a rare occassion when there ISN'T something wrong with it. Can't wait till the day comes that I'm able to dump it & get something else. Until that day arrives, I just keep throwing money at it to keep it going.

Picked it up all repaired. DOES NOT SHIFT BY WIRE! Has two seperate cables as in TWO. Part numbers are: 25995571 and 25995564. I have 44K miles on it and it was a Goodwill Repair. Am a Happy Camper once again. I bought it with 40K miles on it. Seemed to check out good so I did the deed. Was just surprised the shifter went out when it did with no warning. Ran good and we parked and went in to eat dinner. Came out an hour later and nothing, just lights is all.

Glad you got it fixed. That would've been a nightmare had you been camping.

My buddy and I were deep in the woods hunting. And with his 2003 Duramax while driving slowly on a forest sevice road, ran over a fallen tree branch/stick on the road. Next thing we heard a thump underneath the truck and the gear shift slammed down into 1st gear.
We stopped and were unable to move the shift lever into any other gear, it was jambed down into fist gear only!
We pulled out the broken stick as best we could, but still stuck in first gear. Headed back out the 25 miles to town in 1st gear all the way, and from there had it towed into the dealer.
$300+ later it was repaired. Dealer said the stick jammed and mangeled the shift lincage so bad it had to be replaced.
Two things come to mind here--we could not have backed up anywhere to turn around in the woods, and---if we had shut off the engine we could not have restarted it at all, and probably spent the night in the woods. Whew!

My 86 firebird had shifter cable failure. Thankfully I was not in the woods hunting or camping at the time.

And no, I am not joking. I used that car for everything. Lol.

Been hunting with Chrysler Sebring convertable, Ford Focus, and now a 2wd F150.

Ok. That's a digression from the op's original post.

Op I am glad you got it fixed.

And with 44k miles your truck may have 3-4 equivalent years worth of wear and tear on it.

However, it is strange for a shifter cable to break that early in the trucks life cycle.

The PO may have enjoyed abusing the truck or may have drove around with their hand on the shifter putting pressure on the cable. Or something else.

Cheers
