I use a Bank of America debit card and get cash advances from Scotia Bank. They have an agreement with BOA so there are no transaction fees and you get the current exchange rate. Use CASH exclusively and go to Canada every year to see the grandchildren.
Will spend this summer on PEI and will spend a lot of cash.

I use the ATM and use my credit Union account. I never get a transaction charge. I keep the Credit Card out of sight in Camada except for gas in the MH.

Yes that's right, when I use my Scotia bank debit card at BOA's in the US, I don't get charged extra fees. So check with your bank to see if they have something set up with a Canadian bank.
Enjoy Canada. Try to use a reputable bank machine (Royal Bank, Scotia, CIBC, Bank of Montreal, TD Canada Trust) to avoid extra fees. Your credit card and debit cards are pretty safe here, it's not India
