What's the best way to conduct business in Canada from the U.S.? Use credit cards or exchange cash ahead of time? Going to Nova Scotia in August from Michigan.

Amen on the ATM. On our trip last summer to Alaska through Alberta and BC, we made the mistake of taking American cash and found that not all Canadian banks were eager to exchange it for Canadian funds. Bank of Montreal was the friendliest. Our next trip will include finding the first reputable ATM we can find after we cross the border to get Candian funds to handle the everyday stuff. Plastic was accepted nearly everywhere we went with no problem. Be sure to notify the card company and your bank that you will be travelling.

I usually keep some cash but use my C.C for most purchases like C.G, groceries, rig service with no problems at all.

Credit cards...but make sure you use a card with no foreign transaction fees...such as a capital one card. You will get the best exchange rate and pay no fees.

I don't think it would be a real problem in Canada, however, I've been burned in India using my bank card before. I bought some things there then I started getting charges from Thailand, which I've never been to. Now I always ask my bank to give me a new card with the number changed when I get back into the U.S.

I also always call the bank beforehand to tell them where I'm going so they won't put a hold on my card when they see foreign charges start coming through. A friend on mine didn't do that and I had to pay for his hotel room on my card then he had to pay me back after we came home.

I travel almost exclusively on my Debit Card. No transaction fees in Canada, automatic conversion rates and accepted everywhere I've been. I DID have to write a program that applied a standard conversion to all transactions and corrected itself when the transaction cleared the bank (usually in a day or two at most). We carried about $50.00 in cash just in case it was needed, and replenished it if necessary at an ATM.

If you're using debit don't forget Walmart as a good source of cash.
