Ranger crossed the Rainbow Bridge last night. He was a 12 year old lab. He had a lot of spirit and was the best dog a person could want. In his 12 years he fought through a mid-back stroke and learned to walk again. Had three stomach surgeries to remove rocks. A bacteria infection that almost killed him and ultimately destroyed his immune system. The past six months he's pretty much been unable to walk without us holding up his back end by his tail (he wouldn't tolerate a sling) because he'd developed a doggie form of MS and in the past six weeks the infection had returned. Yesterday afternoon I came home to find him out of it, in shock and severely swollen. A quick haul to the vet revealed his stomach had flipped causing bloat. The doc said that even if he survived the surgery he probably wouldn't survive the recovery. He'd been through so much we just couldn't put him through anymore. It was his time and he didn't go alone, which was important to my wife because Ranger was a real people dog.

That Rainbow Bridge sure sounds like a nice place for Ranger to wait for you John. I hope your Ranger meets up with my Casey... he just got there a couple weeks ago and perhaps they can explore together.

Sorry for your loss. Sounds like you gave Ranger the best care for a full life. I know he'll be missed.

I'm so sorry to hear about Ranger. It can be so hard to know when to let a beloved pet go, but you really didn't have a choice. My granddog is a lab so I know how wonderful labs are. He'll have lots of company over the rainbow bridge, including my Freda, Jason, Rascal and Lacey. As to those who say dogs don't go to heaven- that's ridiculous-it couldn't be heaven without dogs. So you'll see him again.

I have raised labs for years and we are now down to just the old girl. She's going to be 14 this spring. Not bad for a momma dog who has had 53 puppies in 4 litters. Yep 53!! Largest was 16 and 15 lived. It is so hard to put them down we have her mom, daughter, sister and grandmom all buried in the lower garden. You never forget any of them. My husband says the best compliment you can pay a dog is that he (she) was the best old dog.

understand, 3 years ago next month, our yellow lab Whitney had to be put down. Gosh, I feel your pain. Thinking about you and your family.

I will tell Ole' Jake (I talk to him way more than I should) to be looking for Ranger. He's been waiting for me about 8 years now so he should know his way around and would be happy to show Ranger the ropes. Sorry for your loss.
