Gen Box Photos

I posted recently regarding my purchase of a new Yamaha Super Quiet 3000ISEB generator for use with our Komfort.  During my search and subsequent to the purchase I researched on this site as well as every place I could find on the Web, that made a reasonably priced all weather box.  I wanted a box that could be secured in my truck and removed when necessary.  It needed to be "properly vented" and provide protection during operation during rain or snow.  It also needed to be able to function with my remote control and accessible for adding fuel and oil.  I found several homemade boxes that, well looked homemade! Lol.  Admittedly I did find two manufactures that had very nice boxes for my specific Generator.  It turns out both companies were owned by the same entity.  One carried just short of $1000.00 price tag plus shipping.  The second was based on a more recognizable truck tool box design.  I like it because I could store my extension cords and towing accessories.  It was price close to $1500.00 plus shipping.  Assuming all that being acceptable, I was informed both boxes were four weeks out on production, plus delivery time of two additional weeks.  So... I started thinking!  I know, I know first mistake!  Lol.  Therefore my newest project began.  I have photos posted at location below!  All components are new, and the final product will be Rhino coated to match my F450.  The basis for the box utilizes a stock 48inch "construction box" purchased from the good folks at Tractor Supply.  I paid $299.00 including tax and delivery. I purchased $35.00 in vents and $154.00 for high Output exhaust fan, $200 from Welding Co including installation.  Last will be Rhino Coated after use for a couple weeks, $100.00 including material.  Locks, hardware, etc $28.00  Total cost $816.00 !  I should note I  got some advice along the way, from friends and an engineer who agreed to reviewed my ideas.  ( no charge)  He was very little help! Lol.  He began by telling me the things I "could not" do with Gen. in box!  The list of concerns were extensive.  for example, "not starting" Generator without first opening lid, no gas can in box, nothing blocking flow, sparks from fan motor... etc.etc.... Yes I assured him I was aware of those issues, after-owing twin engine Cabin Cruisers with enclosed mechanical engines.  My answers seemed to calm him down.  It was apparent to him that I put a great deal of thought into this and consulted my boating friends in great length.  With "my custom box"  or either of the units I could purchased online,  these issues would be identical!  My plan is to have the tool box modified to accept the vents, fan, and allow for proper exhaust venting.  Further an opening will be cut in the front, fitted with locking door allowing access to controls and plugs.  Note I even ordered caution labels for heat, electric shock and warning of "live snakes inside"!  So thanks for reading, tell me your thoughts etc.  I am not perfect, might have forgot something.  I really would like imput.  Let the games begin!

I like the Gen box. Will it be secured to the truck bed?

. Thanks! It is bolted to the bed underneath truck from two separate locations. Can only unlock from inside of box. I also have steal/cable rope style pad locks on each side. More for fun and looks than protection. So if someone gets by motion alarms and cuts off the side cable locks the box won't move! I have sick sense of humor! Lol. I chose this box because of the hidden latch and pad lock system. Also note the Generator itself is cabled through the bottom of box. Won't lift out until locks released. Finally I have this thing called insurance! Lol

"Caution Live Rattle Snakes" signs go on after box is coated!

I like the gen box as well, because it does not look like a generator's home. With the hidden latch and padlocks, most meth-heads will wander off looking for an easier score.

Looks good, will you be able to start it through that 'hatch' in the front? You could put Styrofoam insulation in there to to quiet it down maybe?

Nice work. It is too high for a 5er trailer though. Our 3000 sits on the bed chained and locked, covered with a BBQ cover to keep it out of the weather. That way the gas cap at the top is low enough not to interfere with the 5er.

Thought about the insulation. It was only 40 decibel tonight at 15 feet. No rattle or other noise. With the Rhino inside and out I doubt if I would need it. The smal hatch will be open during operation. Putting an arm to hold it open. Lid is larger than hole! Must be open to use remote. I am ordering an outside antenna booster. Fan worked very well. Inside was only about 3 degrees warmer than outside after one hour. Even box was not hot to touch. Warm but not hot.

Report on first full weekend using Generator and Box! It performed very well never reaching more than two degrees (all weekend long) above ambient temp. Infact the amount of airflow created by exhaust fan even kept the generator cooler to the touch. My fan may in fact be larger than necessary, but I like overkill. I ran unit for one hour without fan plugged in to gen and box temp was still only 7 degrees warmer than ambient temp at exhaust side of Generator. Further, I am pleased to report: The remote for the Yamaha worked perfectly without an antenna booster. Wireless thermometers that monitor box Generator box temp, gave accurate readings. I am happy with all systems performance and in fact had two campers come over to tell me, they only heard generator when they walked by our camp site. From next site over they said they were not aware a generator was being used. Yes I am patting myself on back!!! Lol
