I'm going to travel the trans Canada highway from the Great Lakes to Dawson Creek this summer. I am wanting to know about overnight stops such as rest areas or pulloffs. When I travel across the lower 48 I often use the rest areas along the interstates for a one night stop. Can you do this in Canada? Any tips and advice on any part of my trip is very welcome!!
Always waiting for that next hike, next boat to paddle, next reef to explore and the trip that gets us there!

All I know is they gave my family HELL when we crossed the Canadian border. I have no idea why. I was respectful, courteous. We had our 5 children with us knew our destionation... They pulled us all out and searched the RV for 3 hours.
I'll never go back to Canada.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

You can't do it in all States either. Some will allow it and others will give you a ticket. Same thing applies in Canada. Each Province will set their own rules. Check signs first.

Some sections or providences in Canada allow overnight stops along the highway, others not and they post signs along the highway. We have been traveling into Canada for years, never had a problem until the last trip. As stated, out of the camper, and two agents searched our unit and truck for about 1 hr. Almost felt like WHY? That was 9 years ago, and have not returned. Too many spectacular sights to see in the good old USA, other than being hassled at the border.

Unfortunately those search's can happen going either way accross the border. Happens to us to trying to go into the US. Just a part of travel.
As for overnighting at rest stops, it's like others have said it varies by province. But there's always Walmart too.

He's right on this. Sometimes it's just your turn for the random "deep" search. Being an Okie that lives in Canada though, I am under the firm impression that if your car or passport indicates you are from certain US states then you are much more likely to be suspected of having firearms (and searched accordingly). Oklahoma and Texas would be among those states that get a little extra scrutiny. I'd also venture a guess that the "deeper" your southern accent the more the odds of a search go against you as well. I figure it's just a result of being from God's country (Oklahoma) or being it's neighbor (TX).... he he... all in good fun bud!
To the original poster..... If rest stops don't work for ya but your looking for quick-n-free overnighter kinda thing.... be aware that Wal-Mart does exist up here.
Constructive disagreement is encouraged. It is how I/we learn!

I traveled from Dawson Creek to Winnipeg last summer and only stayed in a campground one night. All other nights were in rest areas or pull offs along the highway. No problem.

There are less "Rest Stops" than you would encounter in the U.S. Some you probably would not want to stay at as they are really just pull offs. There are casinos and WalMarts that you can night in. There is a good KOA in Thunderbay right on 17 and other campsites throughout the trip.

I'm sorry you feel that way crasster. The hundreds of thousands of US citizens that come up here to see the other beautiful sights have come thru the border and I'm sure many have had the same experience. As others have said it goes both ways, and we all have had some form of hell at a border crossing. However, it won't deter me from enjoying the big picture, and that is what RVing is all about, and the only person that will miss out is you. I hope you rethink your decission and come and enjoy what we Canadians have to offer. JMO Macktee
