greetings all. I have a problem. started the engine up this morning to get on the road and notice the dash a/c was not blowing very cold. had this problem before, hydraulic fan was not coming on due to loose connection. fan was working fine, but then i noticed my drive belt was snapped.

no problem, have the owners manual with the routing diagram and an extra belt just in case this happened.

all the pulleys are turning freely by hand, A/C, tensioner, all except the alternator. frozen solid! should i be able to turn it by hand? don't want to put my only other belt on and realize that it was the reason the first one snapped?

160 amp in CAT C9 in Beaver Contessa.

help?

Should spin freely. If you have a car, take it to an autoparts store and they will test for free, but it it's frozen, there's little need. Still need a trip to the parts store tho

You should be able to turn the alternator by hand. Time to replace it, that is why the belt snapped.

depending on age and miles on unit it may be better to get a remaned alternator than put new bearings in it.

I've been dealing with this problem for a while. If I'm driving/using the coach on a regular basis ... no problem. If she sets for afew months then I have a seized Alternator. I replaced it once ... same thing happened again. What I do now is take a breakerbar and socket and turn the pully on the alternator and break it free. So far this has worked for me and a heck of a lot cheaper than the $800+ I paid a few years back.

IF you in FACT have to use a breaker bar to break your alternater free after sitting then you are asking for trouble by going anyhwere with this alternater period.

Seems like it should just have come unwedged?

Not too sure what the problem would be I'm not extremely knowledgeable about that.

Best of luck.

You should never have to free up your alternator. You have sealed bearings on both ends of the alternator and the rotor should turn freely. Replace it before it leaves you high and dry!
