When does a retiree’s winter vacation turn into snowbirding? Or is it the thought of the forum that if you leave for (let’s say) a week in the middle of winter that that’s snowbirding? How about two, three, etc… weeks A one month stay in a condo that you drive too, is that snowbirding, or is that just an extended vacation. How about two, three, etc... months? When does a winter vacation turns into snowbirding? Or is it the idea since you don't work there is no such thing as a vacation.

On edit:

Subsitute Winter Texan for snowbird (above), don't want to offend anyone.

After thinking about the question for about six seconds I think snowbirding is anytime someone that lives in the snow belt goes south to avoid the winter weather. The length of time doesn't matter.
That's my $.03.

Vacationing is not snowbirding, IMO Snow birds go south for the winter and enjoy the time in the warm weather. Vacation is time spent with a plan and timetable. Could be just me but my only plan as a snowbird is to not have a timetable.

IMO, snowbirding is avoiding snow. Doesn't matter how long. I disagree that vacations have timetables (ok, maybe if you're still working,) but our vacations do not have timetables. Rarely even know where we're going. Year before last we went west and the ONLY thing on our plan was to stop on the east side of Glacier N.P. long enough to make a day trip to Waterton N.P. in Canada. Last summer we went to Montana & Idaho with no schedule whatsoever. That's us. The rest of you do what you want.

I consider myself a snowbird as I spend 2 or 3 months here in florida to avoid the winter snow. my sister on the other hand is a frog, as she will be here till she croaks.

It IS what you believe it is. It's really kind of silly to worry about what you will CALL your trip. It's your trip/vacation so call it what you like. No reason you even NEED to give it a name at all unless it gives you pleasure to do so, just have a good time instead of looking for an "official name" for a made up term.

It can be anything you want it to be. So far, there is no official government definition.

Personally, I think it matters not and the whole thread is somewhat nonsense.
