Not gonna happen, unless you only tow down hill. But you'll love the Ecoboost power in the Rockies.

The F150 supposedly gets 22mpg highway not pulling. My hope is to see 15 to 16 mpg pulling 8000lb.
Anyone out there actually pulling an 8000lb 5th wheel with an F150 EcoBoost engine that can tell me what MPG they get pulling? Also, how does this configuration handle?

Thanks in advance

It appears judging by the posts on the Ecoboost Forum, there are a fair number that are barely seeing more than 16 mpg unloaded and some that are not even seeing that. It appears that you would be in the 8-9 mpg range.

I'm considering buying a small 5th wheel and pulling it with a Ford F150 with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine. It would be a small 5th wheel like the Cougar 246RLS shipping weight 6570lb and a hitch weight of 1525lb. or a Rockwood 8244WS shipping weight 6786lb and hitch weight of 1342lb. The F150 supposedly gets 22mpg highway not pulling. My hope is to see 15 to 16 mpg pulling 8000lb.

LOL on ever seeing over 10 with a 5er pulled with any gas engine and there isn't a TV around that sees 15 to 16 pulling a high profile 5er. You will be lucky IMO to break 9mpg with a 5er.

My 2000 F-250 with 7.3L got around 15 daily unloaded, pulling a high-profile fifth-wheel it consistently got between 10.5 and 11.5. I drove it around 68-70 mph which put it right in the peak of its torque curve with the 3.73 gears, and let it run in OD most of the time. Going on a "downhill" route (I live in the mountains) I got around 11.5. Coming back home at the same speeds, locked in 3rd when I hit the hills to prevent hunting, I would get 10.5. I driving that combination of truck/trailer for 8 years, I don't think I ever got outside that range.

I haven't pulled with my new F-350 yet, but I expect about the same mileage since it is the same camper, but a heavier truck, with 4.10's. I will adjust my cruising speed to the power band of the new truck, and run where it seems comfortable.

You will never see 15-16!

It is still a 1/2 ton PU, pin weight is why 1/2 tons have a hard time with 5th wheels. 3.5L and 5th wheel really ? , that just doesnt sound like it will work no matter what ford says.

Truck Trend just did a test with the EB vs. a new 5.0. They had identical MPG.

And how much more $$ is the Eco Boost? Marketing is a wonderful thing.

Wow - only one post before the weight police chimed in to attempt to hijack the thread.

Seems today is the Eco Boost's day in the barrel...

15 mpg pulling the 5ver is not going to happen. With no wind and a good right foot, probably 10. Push it into a wind, and it'll be single digits. Not going to be the 22 mpg highway that the Eco can get with a driver that knows how to drive it.

Although I've seen it personally, I would not tow a 5ver with an F150. The small 5vers would be within the weight capacity of the F150, and the Eco will give you plenty of power, but I'd rather have a Superduty for that.

I think it's something like $750.00 more.
