If you go with the 99, get a Dorman 42025 cylinder head repair kit. Orielleys or autozone carry it. If the motor pops a sparkplug out the kit will get you going again in no time. it works great for $60. Don't get the cheaper kit that autozone has, the dorman is a specific fit.

I love my 2009 F250 V-10. I tow a 2009 Challenger and have had no problems at all. I did add Airlift 5000 airbags to the truck and it has a 410 rear end. I have looked at moving to a 1 ton diesel but can not justify the expense. The service manager at my Ford dealer and I had a long discussion about that the other day and he said he would not change either if he were me. I will admit I am on right on the upper end of the GVCW and axel weight limits, but according to the scales, I am within the Ford guidelines.

No...Not even close. That trailer is waaaayyyy too heavy for that truck.

That 16,185 is the GVWR, not what it weighs when loaded. unless he loads 4000 lbs. of stuff in the trailer it will not weigh that much the dry weight is 12,145 lbs. it will probably weigh around 14,000lbs loaded. whether or not the truck can handle that, I don`t know. too many people always use the GVWR to determine the weight of the trailer. some trailers with a low CCC are OK to use the GVWR. some trailers, such as mine, have a 4100 CCC. my dry weight is 7100lbs and the GVWR is 11,200 lbs. I`ve weighed it and it scales at 9100lbs loaded for a week long trip!

While I do agree with the concept behind your post, I really would not recommend that his truck will handle even (your estimated) 14,000 pound load. Which is less than 2,000 pounds more than dry weight. And who is to say that he might not just as easily be hauling 15,000 pounds, or more, too.

The engine will pull the weight, although it will struggle in places. But the pin weight of the trailer will weigh too heavily on the truck.

Most people do use GVWR for calculating, as it does give you a bit of margin to keep you on the more conservative side for safety reasons.

My truck is a more powerful version V10 with 30 valves. And the 350 version. A good strong truck, to be sure. But I would never expect it to tow a 15,000 5th wheel. Besides, it is rated to tow 14,000 Max.

With a newer V10 (Which has 362hp), and a SRW F350, I'd say yes. With the older V10 with only 275 hp, and lighter capacities, I'd say no. Maybe in a pinch, but not for regular use.

To put that 1999 275hp V10 into perspective, Ford makes a 3.5L V6 with 365hp now.

NO. I had that truck and it pulled my 5er ok with 4.10 gear and airbags, but my 5er was 10,600lbs dry weight. I towed a trailer about as heavy as yours one day for a friend who bought it and didn't have a truck yet. I really thought it was going to ruin my truck. The max 5th wheel weight for that truck with 4.10 gear was 12,000lbs. My truck weighed 6140lbs empty (crew cab, Lariat, 2wd, short box). Add 4 0r 5 people and gear and the truck might weigh 6700lbs. That only leaves 2100lbs for pin weight. I think that trailer is well above that.

This sounds like you already HAVE both the trailer and the truck?

Sorry but they are not a safe pair.

You either have too big/heavy of a trailer

OR

too light of a truck...

for that couple to dance so time to find a new partner
