This spring I will be headed to an Army reunion in Columbus, GA. I wish to get there without going thru Atlanta. My preferred route takes me by way of Chattanooga.
My question is what roads should I take after leaving TN? I do not mind back roads as long as they are not filled with traffic signals or traffic. The more rural they are, the better I like it. I will be driving a car and not using an RV for this trip.
Thanks,

Exit 312 below Calhoun, run Ga 53 over to Rome, pickup US 27, run it down to Lagrange.

alageezer's route is about the best there is. Be sure to take GA loop 1 around Rome, from GA-53 to US-411. US-411 will join with US-27 on the south side of Rome. The other thing to think about is taking US-27A from Carrollton to Newnan and I-85 south. La Grange doesn't have a bypass, but neither does Newnan. I would go through Cedartown, it's small and I don't like the bypass. But I would go through Atlanta also

Just drove the exact route described above twice last week. Its a nice drive...some traffic lights and towns but mostly wide open 4 lane (not limited access)road.
One caution...pay attention to speed limits...there are some parts of this route that are watched very closely by the police....Some of the nice long smooth wide stretches seem to enourage a heavy right foot ...don't give in to the temptation or it could impact your wallet

Thanks for the responses so far. I was looking carefully at the GA map and noted the following may be a more rural route with more Interstate travel but still bypassing Atlanta. I value your opinions... what do you think of this?
South on I-75 to exit #288 in GA
West on 113 / 61 thru Cartersville, GA
Follow SR 61 South to loop around Carrollton
Exit Carrollton Loop to US 27-A to Newman
I-85 South to Columbus

IMHO the GA-61 route isn't far enough out from Atlanta, you’re hitting the edge of the sprawl. Plus GA-61 is 2 lanes. I think US-27 between Rome and Carrollton is now all 4 lanes, but I haven't driven that section in several years.

61 is going to take you through suburbs and a LOT of traffic lights. I would take the 53 to 27 route you mentioned above before taking that one.
Still, I am not sure why you want to avoid Atlanta. Can you explain your reasoning for wanting to skip it? If you time it right (and this is not hard to do), there is no reason to avoid Atlanta - its bark is worse than the bite. Its really not very difficult to navigate through. If you need help on timing, I can give you some tips on that.

The reason I want to avoid Atlanta is simple. I will arrive there around rush hour in the evening.
I have been thru Atlanta a number of times.......... some good, some bad. Once, while towing, I was involved with a four hour tie up on the Interstate.

If you have a passenger with you, you can use the HOV lane thru Atlanta. That makes the trip almost a breeze.
