You should always keep your version updated Why would you run 2006 in 2012? It is free to update versions when you log into your account as long as you have a current license number.

I never trusted Norton antivirus anyway. It bogs down your system and isn't that effective in my experiences with it.

If you read the article it said that Symantec recommends disabling all versions of the product, not just the one that was current in 2006. Here's a link straight from Symantec for those who don't want to read the original link: Symantec White Paper

Kind of sad that a security-oriented has its source code stolen, not just a simple script-kiddie web site defacement, and they don't even know it.

I second this statement.

A quick read of the article in the link from the OP, as well as the white paper linked to by bwanshoom, indicates that the issue is not with Symantec's AntiVirus or Internet Security software. The issue is related to users of pcAnywhere, which is a program used mainly by corporate IT departments to access, troubleshoot and repair issues with computers at remote locations.

In both the article and the white paper, Symantec advises users of pcAnywhere to disable that software. There is no recommendation for users to disable Symantec's antivirus or internet security software.

Yeah, sorry for not clarifying that, it's pcAnywhere. However, my concern still stands - if a security company can get it's source code stolen (and their source code is their IP), even if it's not for their main cash cow product, how good are they really at security? Are we to believe that their network and infrastructure security is somehow better for their AV products? And if code was pilfered once without them knowing, did it ever happen more than that?

This post is **NOT** about Norton, but back when the first virus programs were released and a few companies popped up with anti-virus programs for sale (NOT THIS STORY IS ***NOT*** about Norton) I suspected that some of them may have been responsible for the release of said virus programs as well......

20 some years later. I'm having lunch with an IT professional and he told me which company it was ***NOT NORTON*** (NOTE: I will not name the company, nor will I eliminate any company other than Norton) who hired a college professor, where said professor professed and so on.

So not trusting them is a good thing.. now my source specifically knwos Mr. Norton and assures me that he would not do such a thing, Which is why this post is NOT ABOUT NORTON.

I have no reason to doubt my source. and he did, after all, confirm my suspicions regarding another big name in the business.

cnet had that a week or two ago. It is a non-issue, as it is an outdated version, and almost none of that code is in the current versions.
