I'm a college librarian, have been teaching internet research for years, and along the way have kept changing my primary search engine to the best available. Google has been at the top of my list for a LONG time.
Don't forget that after the search engine finds sites for you it is still up to you to evaluate what you find. Ask yourself these three simple questions: Who put it online? Why did they do that? When did they do that?

A recent interesting Google search story...
The other day I searched for a boat chart and happened to use Google. Now I also wear contact lenses, and sitting in my Gmail inbox is a reminder email to reorder them. So how interesting was it that a couple lines into the search results for the boating chart there sits an advertisement for a web site selling my exact brand of contact lenses.
I know Gmail reads my mail to place ads around my Inbox, but it never occurred to me they would apply that knowledge to any search I did - plus return the result to look like any other search result. Strikes me as a bit sneaky so I've been using duckduckgo.com more and more.

Today I received a notice from Google regarding their 'new privacy policy' which will come into effect on March 1. Read it over a couple of times and it certainly sounds increasingly intrusive to me. I've used G-mail for several years and have like it for the most part (I also have two other mail accounts) but if they are planning to integrate my e-mail 'information' with other features (browser, etc.) in order to "tailor your search results – based on the interests you've expressed in Google+, Gmail, and YouTube", I don't need it. Yes, Google has offered many wonderful FREE services but now they're wanting us to pay the piper by allowing them even more intrusion. Thanks, Google, but no thanks!

Everyone knows about Google & MS Explore. Trying to get info regarding other search engines and an idea if others use them. I am currently using duckduckgo myself. Have used dogpile in the past.
