They used to offer the 5.4 liter v-8 in the Superduty line, and the eco-boost puts out a lot more horsepower and torque than the 5.4 liter did and at a much lower rpm. The only thing I can think of is they are worried about longevity under harsher duty cycles? so far, though, the ecoboost is proving to be pretty durable.
Because in a 7-9K pound truck it would be boosting alot, and there goes your mileage. Unless/untill there arises technology that none of us know about yet, a V8 EcoBoost will only get the mileage it gets now without the turbos pushing air. In otherwords a 6.2 gets what 12-14 empty? Your just not going to improve that, and it would go down while towing. Only advantage is power when you need it, and it's gonna cost you.
Having said that, think back even a few years. We never dreamed they'd be doing what their doing now, so never say never. My Guess? I think it's more like 5 years down the road, and an entirely new engine design. Not turbos thrown onto a 5.0 etc. (This opinion and $3 will get you a cup of Starbucks coffee).

I would love to see a big inline six gasser with ecoboost technology. That would be awesome.
I am sure something is in the works based on the technology.
Interesting choice of engines you mentioned. However ford has put its eggs in the V basket so I would you'd see a 5.0L V8 ecoboost.
HOWEVER...... The old 4.9L inline 6 was a stout, reliable engine. The last model produced 260 ft-lbs of torque. Not too shabby considering that was 17 model years ago. The HP was wheezy at 150HP but I do wonder if an ecoboost version of that could put out some healthy numbers?
KJ
I drove many a mile with Fords ...and a Mercury truck...with the 300 inline six. Great engine...tough, undemanding and a torque meister for it's time...but it is old technology.
But the old Chevy inline six of 292 cubic inches also has a similar positive reputation.
But your point is interesting...imagine a gas 300 cubic inch or more. Maybe a gas inline six, with cubic capacity like the Cummins Diesel...think it's 359 cubes @ 5.9 liters, big six...with DOHC's, 4 valves per cylinder and all the latest technology that...say the new (OHC...not older OHV) Ford 5 liter truck V8 has, plus two turbochargers....one for lower rpm...the other to chime in from say 3500 rpm on.
Other than an interesting engineering exercise, I suggest an almost 6 liter six that is inline rather than a V series might have some advantages.
I understand that the inline 6 cylinder is inherently one of the, if not the smoothest running engine.
I also have wondered why, almost without exception very large Diesel engines, used in Class 7/8 trucks seem to be inline six cylinders.
Not V8, not V6, not V10 or V 12...but inline 6 cylinder engines.
I don't know if there are advantages with this engine layout (big, inline six) in terms of torque, power delivery or...other ?

Been done already - with the 5.9 Cummins - I know - I own one!

I think the idea is for gas engines.

Too bad you still can't buy a new one. The 20+ mpg ship has sailed away, it's sails blown by the hp wars and 2008 emission standards.

I would not look for a engine larger than the 4.6L V8 to have Ecoboost on it. Given the 3.5L will have well over 350 HP, the 4.6 should have plenty of power.
I doubt it, the 4.6 mod motor is really old, introduced in 1991. The 4.6 is only available in the E series for 2012, and will likely be phased out in the next two years. If any larger engine is likely to recieve the Ecoboost treatment, it would have to be the 5.0 engine.

For one thing, Ford doesn't have the ecoboost production capacity to support that many sales, even if it wanted to offer the engine in the Superduty. But, word is production capacity is going to be expanded for 2012.

My dad texted me a picture of his mpg computer on his 2003 5.9 cummins turbo on a 600 mile unloaded trip and it said ..... Let me check my phone.....27.9 mpg.
He loves his truck. Said he hit 30 mpg traveling to New Orleans...until he hit the wind over The Lake Pontchartrain causeway. Said it caused him to go back down to 19 mpg.
Thanks

Tell him to tuck behind a tractor/trailer and he will pull 30+ all day, I know, I own one too! Been there done that, but you should have a CB and ask the driver if he does not mine if you tuck in behind him first!!!
